BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I was an early adopter of 1.6gbps with EE and finally approaching the end of my contract... currently paying £67.99 a month :( Is Aquiss or Zen the best place to move to? or are there other options? I was with Zen previously for 900mbps and they seemed to suffer quite badly from what I perceived as congestion.

Would actually entertain staying with EE as I have had no problems but I guess they wont offer me one of the current new customer deals to stay with them?

I’d go with Aquiss. Zen area what they used to be.

It might be worth talking to EE but I doubt they’ll match the new customer deals.

I did like the idea of the Aquiss 12 month contract, especially as Openreach are now further rolling out XGS-PON... Another pointless upgrade, but none the less I want it!!! :)

I'm currently with BT and out of contract, currently paying £42 per month for 150Mbps, I know, dire!

Anyway, BT's renewal deals are not deals as I can cease and sign up again at £25 a month for the same service.

I've been looking at Plusnet but would like to know if they use CGNAT? I cannot see anything that mentions this on their website. I'm happy with a dynamic IP as I have a DNS service active 24/7.

Signed up with Plusnet as BT failed to even come close to the offer from Plusnet. £24 for 300Mb down and 50Mb up on a dynamic IP. Using my own equipment so should be a breeze on switch over day which is this Friday.

3 weeks away from having full fibre installed, looking forward to having quick internet again after almost 4 years of 'struggling' on our FTTC max speeds of 35mb.

We've managed fairly well with 2 lines to the house for working from home / balancing one line for the rest of the house but it'll be nice to essentially half our monthly costs for a much faster line.

I recently signed up with Vodafone 910mb for £25 with £150 cashback.

Installation goes live this Friday.

Already got the FTTP login details so my UniFi "should" just failover back to WAN1. VM is currently connected to WAN2.

For people that use their own equipment, what router is recommended? I've been with BT for years and have always just used their SH. Contract is coming to an end, so I might be switching to Aquiss or somebody else and I'd need to get my own router.

Aquiss has a list of recommendations on their website.

IDNet, who I've also been looking at, also has some recommendations:

I just don't know what's good enough for me. For reference, I'm looking at the 500 mbps packages.

I built my own OPNsense firewall/router with an old reconditioned dell SFF PC and a quad 2.5Gbps NIC.

Works great.

UniFi Cloud Gateway Fibre. Excellent UI, performs well, and as I'm well into their ecosystem it fits in nicely. APs around the house for maximum coverage.

I use the UniFi UDR7 as an all-in-one solution, fantastic piece of kit, I run it on EE 1.6Gbps with no issues. I very nearly went with Aquiss but EE somehow offered me a better price at the time but any UniFi equipment should have no issues with Aquiss.

These options sound great, but may be overkill for me? Are there any budget options that would be recommended?

We live in a fairly small house, so I've not seen any WiFi black spots.

Eero, TP-Link, Zyxel, older Flint, MikroTik (if you're up for learning), all do WiFi routers in the £90-150 range.

Sure there's Ubiquiti, Draytek and others but you would need to double that budget and then some; which is a bit pointless if you just need a cheap 'n' cheerful router that works.

Anything specific that you've used? There's a ton out there, which is a bit overwhelming.

Also, I read somewhere on here that Asus routers aren't favourable? Why is that?

My OR has gone in, not the cleanest outside installs with a chipped brick but to be fair it was pot luck where the drill bit was going to hit.

Engineer left and waiting for the connection to go live. He gave some BS about delays on OR activation, no, he was just on hold for 15 minutes and gave up and left site. He will just phone to activate it later! To be fair, I've done the same type of things!
