the wages are something tiny like 16k there's no way these people can afford to live in london after losing their jobs and house.

Lucky to be working with the Queen, bruv.

I'd imagine the sort who do it would probably happily do it for free e.g. well-off retirees whom like gardening etc.

I'd donate - people love the Royalty, they do a lot of good and are well respected in other countries.

I think they should maybe have more of a maintenance team on-going to do it though... - spending £100,000 a year on 3 or 4 staff rather than paying £150m every 60 years just makes economic sense and would stop big bills happening as you could fix it before it got that bad...

£10,000,000 (allowing £4m for specialist work/equipment) v £150m every 60 years....

£150m is a lot of wrong bits....

One forgets that this is the abode of our head of state, it would be a lot more than £100k/pa, for security reasons alone.

Not really, they have security every day anyway and know what needs to be done. They know far more about people than we ever will. :) I'm sure they have MI6 on speed dial... ;)

Some people would do it for queen and country for nothing but for the love of it and just get paid expenses. There are still those people out there.

Its our history, our culture, part of our tourism industry and the home of our official 'impress the diplomats' head of state.

It needs to be grand, and 60 years service its not that bad. The queen is useful for impressing the envoys of all those countries that dont have one.

Would I donate? No

But I don't have a problem if money is used from the tourist revenue generated by having the royal family/Buckingham palace. As long as they're generating more than they cost I'm happy.

Sounds like a good promo for a privatisation with public IPO to all interested takers, could be profitable :) Not sure about the poll, its not a charity maybe go buy something from their shop if you are a patroit

it is owned by the state not the royal family and frankly it would still be there even if there wasn't a royal family - so regardless of people's views on the royals (personally I think they're good to have for general PR, diplomacy) the palace still needs to be maintained.... roofs leaking and buckets being used to prevent priceless artworks from being destroyed is shambolic for a developed nation
