Burns Night - Haggis!

Without wishing to hijack the thread.

What will you all be drinking?

Anyone tried this?

Never tried it. I always avoid Johnnie Walker - a triumph of marketing over quality in my opinion. I'm sure it will be nice but probably not worth the premium price. I've had the red, black and green label varieties and they're all decent whiskies but overpriced.

I'll probably be having the last of the Caol Ila Distiller's Edition with mine.

A work colleague would agree with you. They said it's nice but not much different to the black. :)

I'm having the last of the haggi I bought from Crombies when I was in Edinburgh last. I'll be having mine with the traditional neeps and tatties with a glass of whisky (not too much - got my offshore medical tomorrow). I don't have any sauce or gravy with mine; simply because I prefer it without.

People put sauce and gravy on haggis?

It's always been just 3 heaps of stuff for me, potato, swede and haggis nothing else :)

Pretty sure its swede.

I've always had it with a whisky cream sauce on the side. Some green veg wouldn't go a miss either, depending on how traditional and rich you want it.

I'm off to a pub tonight, I wonder if it will be on specials.

Neeps = Swede

Went for haggis, neeps and tatties:

Should really have gone for a nice claret, but given that I didn't have any in settled for a wee treat of totally inappropriate G&T instead :p

We had haggis (Macsween) neeps and tatties with a whisky sauce, was very nice.
I quite often have a haggis supper after a few on a night out as the local chippy haggis supper is ace.

Turnip surely?

No haggis for me tonight but I have it several times throughout the year. There's a place in Edinburghcalled Los Cardos which does a haggis burrito. Highly recommended!

I think the confusion comes from the fact that much of Northern England and Scotland refer to swedes as turnips. Myself included.

I don't think I've had actual turnip, but I always call swede turnip. No idea why really lol :D

As much as I like eating them, I dread this time of year as it brings back memories of having to make a few hundred pounds of them. The stink from the boiling offal didn't leave your clothes for a few weeks!

I can relate to that. The first time I made haggis when I worked in a butcher shop put me off eating it for 6 months.

What is this heathen talk of 'making' haggis? Surely the only way to make a haggis is to get a mummy haggis and a daddy haggis who love each other very much .........

I wasn't overly impressed with my Ramsay one, it was a bit bland. Stan, what are the Crombies haggis like?
