Bye Bye Game!

Whichever way you look at it, it's surely inevitable that with the likes of online game e-tailers including steam, plus supermarkets selling games, that there's just no way a games only retailer could survive for much longer.

If they were good at what they did, and tried to be competitive with their competition, they could have thrived.

The problem is that they are making you pay more, to go out of your way to one of their stores and put up with one or more of their irritating staff go on about other games that neither you, nor they care about.

The only advantage they had was the convenience that you could pick up games on the release date without waiting for delivery. However the saving you get online is often so big that you can get the quickest delivery so it gets to you either before, or on the release date and you STILL get the game for a cheaper price..

Well exactly. High street shops have more overheads and staff to pay compared to e-tailers, which is why they can't compete with online prices and which is why they will ultimately die unless they can be diverse with what they sell, such as supermarkets because they sell more than just games.

Anyway..

Stationary rights? you mean statitory rights!!!

how are you meant to put you points across of your stationary rights?

"i have this right to put my pencil shavings over your head for a refund" :D

sorry, just found that rather amusing,, Simple things!!!!!

I don't expect the same amount of games as the console sections because PC is just a obviously more niche platform, and a lot of people digitally download these days

The thing is, the decline is shelf space for PC games predated the move towards (widespread) digital distribution. Go back 5 years (pre Orange Box) and Steam was still very much a niche market in itself, with few publishers onboard and little in the way of UK competition.

Anyway, in terms of GAME itself my wife's cousin is a development manager there, I remember asking him about 6 months ago if they had plans to move into digital distribution themselves rather than via a partnership and he seemed fairly non-plussed about about future plans, the focus all seemed to be on the upcoming Christmas market, which perhaps makes more sense now.

There are ways the could survive, not have as many stores is one. Its not inevitable that things will just decline into nothing. It might if these idiots are running the show.

But their are lots of things they can do to compete against online prices. They have to offer experiences that you will not get online. People shop differently in shops than they do online. Retail shops have more impulse buys. Better customer service, face to face service. To be able to try and play and see these products for real. How big that market is the question, but it will never be zero.

pc games have been poorly stocked and overpriced in game for so long I haven't shopped there for years.

Personally amazed they survived this long.

Indeed overpriced games galore for both consoles and the PC versions - as a result I am amazed they lasted this long also.
I dont see the pending extinction of GAME a big loss to be honest.

Haha, I don't know why I typed stationary. That would have been pretty funny. Then again, I was getting so angry that I don't think he probably understood what I was saying anyway. I'll be damned if some spotty whatsit is going to steal £150 off me when they told me my xbox was in "good condition".

It probably was before they threw it in the store room :p
