*******C.A.R.S - Community Assisted Race Sim*********

The physics isnt finished yet I imagine. Reminds me of the Forza display except its not updating as much or the track is as flat as a snooker table, I guess its all in testing

People tend to be very forthright and righteous in their criticism, I would sympathise with the devs

Very few games get the proper feel of a car right. I wish Geoff Crammond would come back

I hope the sound improves, I'd be happy with any game that let you just burble round the track with a nice V8

Presumably you're the Andy Garton that works for SMS? If so welcome to the forums (although seems you've been lurking a while :p)

That wonderful source of information Wikipedia seems to imply (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Stages_of_development) that "Feature Complete" comes at the end of Alpha status.

It also states that Alpha is the start of Software Testing which would imply CARS has never been publically available as a pre-alpha.

But it is mostly semantics, I'm not sure I'd class feature complete as a definition of Alpha/Beta status, especially when some of your competitors aren't feature complete and ultimately will 'never' be (thinking iRacing here). Also rFactor2 being in 'Beta' yet there are, afaik, still features that are being finalised, by Wiki's definition it should be Alpha, and by yours Pre-Alpha.

From a personal perspective I tend to think of Pre-Alpha as completely unstable, basically just stubs more than anything useful. Alpha would start at the first working draft, progressing to Beta as it gets more stable and then staying there for possibly a long time before being 'released'. So by my definition I'd class CARS as Beta, it's stable enough and with enough features/functionality that it, imo, doesn't deserve the Alpha tag, although arguably it did when first released (but not 'pre-alpha')

I think you need to re-evaluate your pre-conceptions of tradtional software development when viewing a 'live' community driven project like pCARS, just like I have done over the course of this project.

So, I was PC lead on NFS Shift 1/2 and am the engineer responsible for the DX11 engine amongst other things on pCARS... and whilst the previous games did adhere to the Wikipedia model you quote, it would make for a pretty crappy end-user experience if the development strategy followed that of a boxed game, so we've had to think more flexibly than that old school model:

When we release a build on this project we try aim for it to be BETA quality for the currently implemented feature set, however that build's feature set at this time *is* pre-alpha in terms of the final product.
One thing I've found is that the engineering priorities can be somewhat out of order in comparison to developing a single release title.. A great example of this is PC configuration issues - usually all of the pain in the arse things that make a PC game work for a large consumer base are bug fixed from alpha to beta, and in development the game only works well with the limited set of (homogenized) developer PCs. So, we had to spend a lot of time in the early months of pCARS addressing a lot of this stuff much earlier than usual. Semantics aside, there are missing features that make it pre-ALPHA but we aim for BETA quality in the features that have been implemented.

from what i experienced it was a beta quality.

as you say people may judge or say alpha or beta and whatever its pidgeon holed into what it fits. your game is deffinitely not a alpha as id judge it myself and i play a lot of alphas ;) its quite stable and playable. so its a beta for gamers as id class it for normal folk :D

also ill let you know on a little bug as to no hard feelings you can 1 freeze your car and two make it dissapear . me and massicar found this in few laps . good luck on the game. shame it took such a lot of bs to just try and get a basic thing included. we thought it would help the game and make it better.

yeah, 99% of the time the builds have been beta quality. on the rare occasions that major bugs slip through you are usually very quick to release patches for everyone that is affected by the problems

(i actually cant think of any major bugs that have slipped through the weekly builds, but there was probably one or two that ive forgotten about)

yeah the releases are pretty well rounded, Ive had a few crashes (of the game) and some oddness, but it is what it is, dev builds :)

im hoping for some ovals :D

I agree the releases I've used are good quality, I just disagree on the feature complete factor being used to determine that it's in 'pre-alpha' rather than alpha or even beta. Not that it really matters.

Either way, you can really complain about lap times being reset after new builds. If you want to have time trial competitions with your mates you can just post screen shots of your best lap times, like we did in the NFS Shift thread.

@ ~>Dg<~, i don't see the point in complaining in the manner that you have, some game companies want to go in a different direction to how they develop there games, making a alpha game available to the public for a early fee is fine in my opinion because it gives the customer a choice of package they want, if a customer wants to go above the package that gives you a free copy of the game on release then that's there choice.

By making the game public so early if gives the community to help ironing out a lot of the bugs that could be missed with in house testing, same with exploits in the game physics. Regarding the issue with the leaderboard.... if you did your homework properly or even asked questions about this you would have found out much faster about the Junior package being only a package to try out the game and learn about how it works.

A simple solution is to install dropbox and setup a share folder with your friends so that once someone sets a time just take a picture and put it into the share folder and that picture will sync up with all your friends, or just upgrade to the team member package.

must you try to open this up again ?

i got my refund so did my friend. it may suit you how they make do the game it didnt me or my friend, we have been refunded. not everyone agrees with everything . someone will always dislike something that someone else loves.

me and my friends are very competitive . lap times to me and my friends were and are very important . we see it as basics others may not but i see a racing game as a race and the whole point is to finish in the fastest " time " which wasnt recorded in the package for the majority of the time.

the only way to cure or fix this could have been to just add junior lap times which could have been done very easy and the data wouldnt be large a month. but instead you have to pay them more money ! as said we thought this was unreasonable. this is why we wanted refund.

also if you read what i have said ive stated many times how many games i test in various alphas and betas closed , open ,invite, so i do know how the system works. we even found a few bugs not found in a few laps but i dont test it no more so they can sort that .

at end of day its the devs job to deal with customers in a professional way no matter how they actually percieve them personally. if you cant take any criticism then your going to fail and fail hard.deleting accounts cause you cant accept others opinions or answers doesnt work in the long run.

as for the actual game its one of the best racing games ive played ! so its not i dont like the game its i dont agree with other things. sms are there to make money at end of day and who am i to tell them how they want to charge or make it.

so please stop leave this alone enjoy your racing game it will be good in time and hopefully they listen to there fanbase more in the future.

If you really liked the actual game then getting a refund is a bit like "to annoy the bus driver I will buy the ticket and go by foot"...

no i got a refund as if i dont like how they do certain things. after only playing a short while . investing a lot of time and effort and something worse happens it would be even more annoying. also investing more money for basically playing a beta.

also i play many other games which are just as good and free even. one of those is a racing game and similar. so rather than be annoyed with a good game just leave it and concentrate on the ones i do like. pretty simple really.

OK, cool.

I really wish someone would comment on how the saga with the "best physics" video (above) ended. Did devs say that this is normal car behaviour, did they say they will resolve this problem with future updates, did they just ban everyone who was talking about it and said nothing on the matter itself?:)

To be fair Dg you got a refund because we decided to remove you after I asked you to stop posting misinformation in other forums (including this one). You ignored me so a ban was inevitable I'm afraid.

Bought full membership last night.Loving it so far!

Some footage of my crappy driving skills with my Xbox controller, i really need to get myself a wheel for this game as Xbox controller doesn't do it justice.

i'm not sure how your managing it Andy, but i'm delighted to announce that he has revealed two more tracks that i believe are coming to a build near you very soon:

Jin Ding aka Zhuhai International Circuit

Milan Historic circuit

as always, these are nowhere near release quality, so please dont be disappointed by the screenshots

if you would have waited few more seconds in the forum i was asking for my money back ! you locked massicors post after he asked for refund and had your say

show massicors post all he said was can i have a refund . was trolled by some idiot then you said dont spam the forums (that was his only post ). i only put that we have been refunded and what it had been about . reaper tried to add something to one of my other posts on another site which wasnt right about the situation so i got it removed .

you can edit your stuff on your own site or lock it but not on others you dont control or send your lackies ;)

just leave it alone get info of your game in here . im not going to play your game again so what does it matter ? only reason i respond is you add or someone else adds to it.

You are such a lier buddie ...and the simple reason I know your lieing is because that was my very first post on your forum or any forum about your game ..basicly asking for a refund with the reason for a refund ..so you going on about "stop posting misinformation in other forums" is a load of bullcrap as we only posted in other forums AFTER you banned us..such lies m8 :)) this is partly why we asked for a refund ..not because of the game ..but the way you handle things ...YOU LIE ..and we didnt want to be a part of a game where the main guys talk a load of crap and edit posts to make themself look better :)

is it possible that andy mistook you for DG on this forum or another one?

*edit*
ive just read your thread, here is the quote from andy:
"Could you (Massicor) and your friends stop spouting nonsense on other forums please?"
... several posts later...
"You're still doing it dgeesi0 (at OcUK). Vittorio please refund this user ASAP and remove his account."

looks like andy was mainly aiming his accusations at DG. however, if you ask for a refund you dont keep your forum access, thats why Massicor showed up as removed
