Cadwell Park Trackday - Saturday 4th April - £149

Cheers for the pictures Tim! Next time I'll bring my 40d and get someone to snap away while we're on the track if no-one else has a one (I left it in France last weekend otherwise I would have brought it).

gobbo - That S15 was epic, sounded amazing and looked crazy with the bootwell cut out. Had to move over quick every time I spotted it in my rear view mirror.

I was out on the track when the MR2 rolled but didn't see it (it was somewhere behind me). One of a few casualties yesterday - I saw a yellow S1 Elise limping off the track with a smashed rear clam.

It's not a forgiving track (seems on par with Oulton Park) but the risk is well worth it. I will definitely be going back.

Thanks for those pics Tim, interesting you didnt think the suspension work was the best mod ;)

Yikes at those pictures Gobbo... don't suppose there were any taken of my S2000 at all? I have some i'm going to upload now that I'll link in here but it would be good to see what else was taken !

The marshall was running over the track (with me coming over the blind crest at near to 100!) as that MR2 rolled. One of the marshalls was saying later that on the same lap he nearly lost it coming into the barn complex, and they were shocked he hadn't learnt his lesson and backed off.

That SX was brutally quick down the straights but I didnt feel I was that far behind him through the corners.... any ideas on what mods he had done to it?

I'll have a rummage, see what I can find, they're are some of a very track prepped DC2 that was there.

SX is actually a 14a with a 15 front end, he's got a rear diffuser being developed at the moment that will be filling the rear up a bit more. It's making ~350bhp at the moment due to an issue with i/c flow rates, spec is taken from SXOC post:

Fair to say it's a bit of a monster, he's looking at loads of engine options at the moment, 1JZ/2JZ/SR20/V8/RB26, what ever he goes with it'll be seriously quick! Cadwell was only his 3rd track outing so he's still sorting out best setup and I think he's getting some stiffer springs as current ones are a big too soft.

A standard SX weighs around 1200kg, with all the bits this has had chopped off it this one has to be a fair bit less than that.

Good to see people get their rosy ass-cheeks on track. You guys are leading the way, quite a few OcUK motor forum peeps with hot cars seem a bit track shy?

Never understand why people with performance cars wouldn't want to know what the final 15% of their cars ability feels like

Me and nick are going to try and do a track day a month this year... So far I've done (318iS is me sharing with Nick)

August - Bedford - S2000
December - Bedford - 318iS
January - Bedford - S2000
February - Bedford - 318iS
March - Cadwell Park - S2000
April - Bedford - S2000

Granted I've not used my car each month, but if its no trackday, or a trackday in Nicks track car its not a hard choice really !

Because it costs a fortune and wears bits out on your car :(

awesome that's making me excited for the 1st of may when I'm there. Suspect most of the entrants on my track day will be somewhat lamer than the people on your day by the looks of things however!

Yeah but you would be the first to tell people not to buy a car they cannot afford to run.

Granted you will shred thru tyres so.. buy a spare set and fit decent rubber or even swap our your old set of your own part worns on to there and treat your road wheels to new tyres. Second hand BMW alloys are not expensive.

Brake pads.. Well they are not really all that expensive are they?

Other than that surely a trackday should just highlight any problems rather than immediately cause any new ones unless you crash?

Insurance- well personally I don't bother because the value of a mk1 mx5 is so low but I can understand that will not be the same for other people

Cost of actual day- Well £135 isn't that much considering 40 minutes of karting is £40. If you don't want to cough up for the trackday and fuel etc then share it with a mate you trust and split the driving. Helps prevent some of the red mist descending by not driving all the time anyway. (£135 is a typical cost for a day where each hour is split in to 3 sessions of 20 minutes and you drive for one of those three sessions).

I agree trackdays are expensive but they do not need to be prohibitively expensive and are a much more appropriate place to practise spirited driving than the road.

+ Clutch and gearbox as no doubt you'd be hammering it.

It is expensive, but it is worth it.

I've completely forgotten the drive to work this morning, but I remember every bit of every track day I've ever done.

with second hand boxes available for £40 and clutch coming out at not more than about £300 I'm not so bothered. I admit tracking a car with a weak gearbox could be expensive. The mx5 box is pretty tough. Your point is valid in relation to other cars however.

No doubt that the cost of a track day can be expensive (ticket to get in and fuel) but surprisingly after three trackdays, everything on my car is still ok.

Ive just had it serviced due to an MOT and changed the brake fluid as Ive had a brake swap from a 300Zx TT but it didnt need it.

If you dont stay out for ages but do short stints, the car handles it surprisingly well.

Yup, I've been doing lots recently (some days over 200miles on track, so the car doesn't get it easy). Only thing I've had break is an HT lead, of which the old ones were temperamental anyway. Cost about £80 for a new set.
