Can you remember where you were when you joined OcUK?

It was 1972, I was in a crack commando unit that was sent to prison by a military court for a crime I didn’t commit. I promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground where I signed up to ocuk forums. Today, still wanted by the government, I survive as a soldier of fortune 2 . If you have a problem, If no one else can help and if you can find the letter box. Maybe you can do what you know you should do.

I don't remember the specific moments, but I think the OP just meant what was life like in general at sign-up time. I discovered the OcUK shop first in late 2003 then joined the forum a few months later as per date underneath my avatar.

At both times (Dec 2003 and May 2004), I was living in a house-share in Stafford with 4 other randoms. The sort of place with 3 upstairs bedrooms then the lounge and dining room converted into an extra 2 bedrooms. It was depressing times because we had the police around a few times due to a drugs bust, a suicide attempt (blood everywhere) and a stabbing. All incidents happened INSIDE this house, but they were different tenants! The druggie got booted and then the landlord moved into that vacant bedroom, so to become a live-in landlord due to a relationship breakup. He was a pain because he treated me as his tech support guy because I was the techie for a local computing firm at the time.

Job-wise, I was 1st/2nd-line support for a firm that customised computers for special needs e.g. dyslexia, sensory impairment, learning disability, physical handicaps and so on.

Life-wise, clubbing was my life e.g. Godskitchen, Sundissential, Gatecrasher, Atomic Jam.

Gaming-wise, I was probably still playing Age of Mythology then I had my first taster of an MMORPG via a Star Wars Galaxy 1-month trial. Graphics card was a Geforce FX 5600 in that short weird period where Nvidia cards all started with "FX".

I would have been 15 or so, living at home with my parents. I imagine the majority of my time would have been spent on MSN and playing The Myth of Soma mmo.

I originally signed up and shared the account that @West now has, back in the days when you needed an ISP email and I didn't have one.

I doubt things would have changed much when I signed up on this account a bit later.

In 2009 I would have been 17. Fairly sure I'd been a lurker of the forums for quite some time before that. I think I found the forums through an MSN friend who I haven't spoken to in forever, couldn't even tell you their name now so no idea if they're still on here lol.

I certainly don't specifically remember much about joining. It's only in the past couple of years I've even got to know anyone properly from these forums through discord.

Edit: Would have been living at home for sure. Nothing too exciting. Pretty sure I would have had a E8600 system at that point with a 8800GT.

The Myth of Soma mmo.
I was so addicted to that in the early noughties! What was your toon called?

I think I was about 18, in my room at my parents. I'd just got my student loan and I was looking for some advice on Athlon 1000's for my new build - good times! The forum was white and purple back then I think?

In 2008 I had a classmate who had joined ocuk to get support for a firstbuild and he used this during english media lessons at high school. I joined for general discussion more than the other sections and used it during lunch breaks at school. Shortly after I build my first pc with a Q6600, and I gradually moved away from pchelpforum.co.uk (pchf) which stopped altogether at some point and haven't used any other forums much since.

What year was that?

I was in Portsmouth working at IBM in North Harbour late 90s to mid 00s. Don't remember the exact year 99 or 2000, bought the AMD Slot A with VOS32 and Delta fans.
2000-2001 I think, was my 3rd year of my civil engineering degree. Annoyed my housemates so much with that delta... Don't understand now how I ever out up with it!

Weirdly yes I do remember exactly!

I'd just got back from the hardest Iraq tour I'd ever done (the start of the Mahdi uprising in Basra 2007) with the COB (my base) getting hit by multiple rocket/mortar attacks daily at an increasing rate as spring rolled into summer and (this will sound silly I know) just like I'd done during the 2003 invasion, I "promised" myself a reward if I got back OK (sounds far too overly dramatic in retrospect) which in 2003 was a Skyline R34 but this time was only a new PC :D

I'd been buying bits from OcUK for years before then (my Dad lived in Stoke, literally a five min walk from the shop) but I had a really weird issue after buying all the components where, after literally days of fault finding as to why my new bits wouldn't boot up and my new PSU (and a spare) had blown up quite loudly (always good for the old PTSD :D), I found that my CPU wouldn't work in my MoBo but both would work if used separately (i.e. my CPU in a replacement MoBo or my MoBo with a replacement CPU) as OcUK found out as I tried to get my issue sorted through a quick visit to the shop (pre-RMA) and I jumped on the forum as a user for the first time (always lurked as a guest before).

After I took the two parts back to OcUK they also also saw the same issue so I got a new AMD chip and all was good afterwards.

Here's the post I made - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/msi-k9a-platinum-blowing-power-supplies.17754728/

The Spec - LOL

MSI K9A Platinum
AMD6000+
HSI HD2900 1GB
Corsair 620W PSU

I can't remember why I signed up here, I moved back to my parents and I'd just started a new job, after walking out of my previous one, so decided to splash a bit and build a new PC and remembered about OcUK who I'd used for some bits in the past.

My OG account in 2005... at home, I was 16 so probably in my room tinkering with a P4/Athlon 64 system.

I wasn't banned, just lost log in details and didn't get a repsonse from support, promise.

I wish I'd been given this advice :(

Christ inhad some good awful cases. Apart from the Antec Lanboy.

I signed up in 2003 after months of lurking. Inwas in my childhood bedroom, on my self built PC and was researching my next GPU upgrade. Think it was between the ati 9800se that I ended up getting or the non-pro and flashing it. That's right, I signed up to OcUK to read about flashing and chickened out.

Edit: ha, to be fair to myself, I went back to look at my first post and it was a month after sign up as I was pushing CPU and ram to their limits :D OcUK forums were my education over the years. I got told off by Chong Warrior for not reading his guide like the utter n00b I was.
