Canadian Grand Prix 2012, Montréal - Race 7/20

Trouble is, Lewis isn't just fighting Vettel, Alonso et al, he's also got his clown team to deal with. You know, comedy pit stops, face palming strategy calls etc.

Also, I wonder who Schui is going to take out today ? . . . and then blame them ! :p

Very funny.

I often wonder, if the McLaren strategic team know that they are a laughing stock and are the butt of many jokes?

Not another conspiracy theory...

Opening the throttle or or feeding fuel into the engine when the driver isn't on the throttle pedal is against the regulations, and the engine maps are all visible to the FIA. Red Bull are not using off throttle blowing. The FIA are not 'allowing them to break the rules' either.

People just love to invent controversy to give them something to complain about. And our only source is a random photographer, while every other team in the pitlane seems to have not noticed...

The engines all had a slightly rough note when off the throttle before EBDs anyway.

I think that is the point. Fans can't see the gear ratios. It's not going to affect the show, but it will save money.

Yeah, it will effectively make the gearboxes a sealed unit. I think they have standardised mounting points like the 2014 spec engines too. It means gearboxes are cheap and off the shelf units for customer teams will be the same as factory teams. There are minimal performance advantages to be found in the gearbox, but under the current regulations there could be 12 different gearboxes in the field with a multitude of different ratios.

Its an un-needed complexity and cost, especially to the smaller teams.

That said, I'm not convinced a singe set of ratio's over 8 gears is the best way. They could have allowed maybe 2 or 3 sets of ratios?

There's no doubt RBR have found an efficient way to channel airflow to the diffuser (via exhaust, coke bottle etc), but I don't buy that they're running an EBD, at least not in the same implementation as last year.

Ferrari have made significant gains since race 1, and RBR have made similar gains it would seem. I cannot remember the pace of RBR in race 1 but they were struggling like Ferrari, so it's not really a surprise they've developed.

RBR were behind in Australia, but nowhere near the extent that Ferrari were.

Its that same old story, its much easier to make a bad car good than it is to make a good car better. RBR and Ferrari have cought up McLaren while McLaren have failed to make much progress with their car.

It would be interesting to compare RBR qually times to P1 pace, for each race.. To see how much they've gained. Ferrari too.

I'd do it myself but in lazy and on my phone ;)

Is it 7pm the race starts at? I know the SSF1 program starts a 5.30, and they normally have 1.5 hours of build up - is that still the case tonight?

*edit*
Ignore, just checked Duke's awesome OP and it says in there that the race does indeed start at 7pm

Should have just done that first :D

Random observation re: McLaren's wheel nut situation- was watching the Indycar race last night and I realised that I've never seen any wheel nut problems in their pitstops- in fact their wheel gun system looks so easy compared to F1? Gun on and off almost as if without looking/aiming. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me... (probably just me, I can't imagine there being yet more ways of putting a wheel on...)

You chaps moaning, there's the Men's French Open Final.

Spain v Italy and an England Test Match. Big day of sport!

Loads to watch before F1.

Yeah DTM is the same. Gun on, bzzz, wheel off, gun onto new wheel, wheel onto car, bzzz, drop car, go.

NASCAR wins though. They still have numerous (5?) nuts per wheel, and they can change them almost as fast.
