Canon 1D X official

For the Nikonians, the D4 will be available at the same time as the Canon 1Dx, i.e. a good 4 months before the Olympics. However it will be announced probably in January PMA or in February.

So one must ask the question why Canon announced a product that wont appear for 5 to 6 months....

Yeah that's normally Nikons trick! :p

It's a bit bizarre, Canon have gone for less MP and carried out a paper launch... I wonder if they have kept the original announcement date they had planned but things have been delayed due to the issues in Japan. Any NDA's may have been scheduled to end for the pre-arranged announcement date possibly? There's also the Hollywood announcement to come as well...

Apart from the price the 1DX (should it be called the 1DX or 1D10 as the X is supposed to be for tenth generation? Strange name tbh) is exactly what I want. I had to wait nigh on 7 years for a 1Ds2 to fall in price to get one, I hope I don't have to wait as long for a cheaper 1DX!

As it isn't a straight upgrade replacement for the 1Ds3 and 1DIV I can't see the second hand prices dropping for those too much, which is a shame. I can even see the 1DIV perhaps going up in price as wildlife photographers will want the 1.3x crop and AF @ f8 ability as that looks to be no longer provided for moving forward...

Lots of the design features of the 1Dx seems to come from Nikon such as a sensible MP count and a balanced set of features. Thom Hogan thinks as much:
One thing struck me in looking at the specs and information on the new Canon 1D X model: a lot of Nikon DNA seems to have leaked in. Multiple exposure, an RGB metering system, a Nikon-like autofocus layout complete with 4 and 8 cell Dynamic patterns (instead of Nikon's 9 and 21), chromatic aberration reduction, in-camera raw, and more. Makes me wonder how much Canon DNA will leak into the upcoming Nikon D4.

So tempting, I've alwasy wanted a 1D. I'd purchase in a heartbeat if it was 5k or under. But 6k+ is a little steep, the missus would go mad at me..

5D Mk3 will surely be something along the lines of DigiC5 processor (Not +) and maybe 5FPS. Perhaps with a slightly smaller AF count.
It is under £5K, it's $6.8K

they probably expect Nikon to release a camera before they can come to market with the 1DX and didn't want people jumping ship (or at least waiting to see what Canon could offer)

Yeah, I see it as a direct broadside at the D3s. I know sports shooters who have moved to the D3s from the 1DIV and love the ISO performance. The 1DX should at least match the ISO but bring better cropability with 18MP V 12MP.

It will be interesting to see what Canon brings to the table to replace the "s" Studio line. A high MP 5D3 perhaps? I'm not sure how that'll market as the ISO probably won't take much of a step forward if at all which would be fine for the studio but wedding shooters wouldn't be happy I'm sure! Although Canon may also follow the pixel binning route for a cleaner low MP output? It looks like the D3x would remain unchallenged?

There's still a massive lack of pic examples from the 1DX though!

Just walk into any family attraction like Legoland and see the number of parents shooting DSLRs into auto mode with the kit lens to get an idea of what i'm on about.

You forgot the part about the built-in flashes popping up even in bright daylight ;)

Nice camera, but too expensive for me: would need a f2.8/400 or 4.0/500 instead of my 2.8/300 to get appropriate angles.

It sounds just like the German MG-34 (watched Weaponology yesterday) and they mentioned how this gun was a superior weapon over the Allies under the SS hands...

No one but Pro Sports Photog's need 14 or 12 fps.

For the rest of us; wait until the 5DMK3 comes out next year with the same tech but at a much more accessible price.
