Canon 5D MK4

If I needed to print large (no matter what I shoot), I'd most likely either have a D800/E or if I wanted to use a wider range of lenses an A7r. Going MF is a tad pricey!

Personally I rarely print above 15x10, so even a 24MP camera exceeds my needs.

As i said, printing large is only one possible reason for needing a high resolution sensor:

If you shoot wildlife then MF is extremely undesirable, especially for things like BiF.

Even if you only want a 24MP image then the best way to capture a 24MP image is to downsmaple an image recorded at 50-100MP.

This thread has gone completely off the point (5D mkIV) and should probably be closed.

Lets be honest, is it worth arguing over? Just be happy with with what you shoot and let everyone else get on with what they're shooting.

There's no need to try and convince long term Canon users that they should be using Nikon or anything else for that matter!

No one is though, which is the funny thing.

All I have said is there is a good chance the 5Dmk4 will come with a much higher resolution sensor because it is known that Canon has been conduction field tests with 42-56MP sensors and that almost always Canon has had the sensors with the highest resolution and now they have nothing in that segment.
It is the Canon fanboys that jump on such statements and shout out all sorts of nonsense and fling all the acquisitions, despite the fact all i have said is a new Nikon camera isn't interesting!:D

DP perhaps you know already.. but just in case you don't.. you are playing 'Pigeon Chess'.
Forget about logic. Forget about reason. Forget about fact. It won't help you. Here, it's about as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

So if Canon does bring out this 40mp camera and trumps everything else*, you are going to bat for the other side and sell all your gear and swap over?

Or are you going to be happy with what you got, keep shooting with what you have?

* I am going to qualify that by saying if it trumps Nikon and Sony in all departments, from every chart under the sun, every lab test and user feedback, with SIGNIFICANT noticeable improvement over your camera.

That includes you too, An Exception. Will you be trading all your Nikon gear and get Canon again?

Why do you own a 5dmk3 instead of a Phaseone outfit then

Because I don't shoot commercials, i don't print billboards.

All these talk about D800 is better than 5D3 this and vice versa is just academic. In the real world, people who buy these cameras almost always has thousands invested in glass. Preaching to them about the other one is better is pointless because no one is going to sell and swap everything over and risk losing thousands in resale value (as you do want to swap over quickly and not hang around waiting for best prices). This X is better than Y is interesting on paper and those rich enough to buy straight into a £3k camera with lenses to boot.

In the real world, who sell up and swap over at a drop of a hat because a bunch of random strangers on an internet forum told them so?

The problem is that his logic is flawed and doesn't correspond with the facts of what consumers need and are actually buying.

I actually could see An Exception doing that, he likes to have the very best tools available if that is what he needs. He does seem to have mellowed of late though. Looks like he has been busy putting those tools to use of late :)

Yup, and it would be an easy decision. I want the best camera for me no matter who makes it, and cost isn't a big issue at the moment. I would go medium format but on balance it wouldn't benefit my wedding photography.

In all likely hood I'll probably switch to mirrorless sometime down the road, but the technical progress is a little slower than I would have liked. D810 will probably be my last DSLR's.

So it is ALL about the gear! :D

It's always about the right tools for the job. That's all I've been saying in this thread, I'm more of a ~24MP person, others want to maximise to achieve their specific requirements. An Exception wants the best, and I don't blame him for his choice. Of course that doesn't mean that great work isn't also being done with alternative gear that is available :)

Depends on the differences and my finances, possibly but probably not.
Canon lenses are much dearer than Nikon lens atm.

If money was no object and Canon do release a fantastic high res model then I would likely at lats try it out with the canon 17mm TS.

But this is somewhat irrelevant. I've not said that any of you canon users should swap systems and I've never said that a large majority have. Some people have swapped system in order to get a high resolution high DR sensor when it makes financial sense to them. DPReview has loads of threads of people going from 5dMK2 to D800 (and there are a few people going from D700 to 5Dmk3).
