You think the whole point of the want to see thing is to spew vitriol at the lead actress?
Want-to-see is used as part of the online marketing. Casuals looking for a film to go out see a good want-to-see, and go to the cinema. If everyone wants to see it, maybe I should want to see it too? It's also a double edged sword as a bad want-to-see will put people off.
I think the low score (which was actually only about 75 people) started as an honest response to being demonised and excluded by the lead actress. When Nerdorotic read out a lot of the views, they were pretty mild eg "Brie Larson says this film isn't for me, so I won't be going".
When the story blew up due to the the pre-emptive attacks by virtue signalling websites (ie "review bombing" stories), then the Streisand Effect happened and internet activism took hold, with people deliberately cratering the "want-to-see" scores. At which point Rotten Tomatoes blanks the score, either due to self-censoring, or at Disney/Marvel's request.
As is often the case, attacking the fans rarely works, and more often than not, just blows up in your face. Now the story is all about attacking the fans and then trying to hide it by removing the RT scores. Is it because the movie is bad? Why is it all about the cat? Why is Larsen so bad in the trailers? Why does she hate me because I'm a white guy who normally goes and sees all the superhero films? It all smacks of a lack of confidence in the film.
Marvel/Disney have just handled this very, very badly, because by excluding people while claiming the banner of inclusiveness, they've created a confrontation and damaged their reputation and IP. They've let the situation get away from them after chosing the wrong relationship with the fans and movie-goers they are trying to woo.
Just compare the last six months of Captain Marvel promos and Brie Larson's comments, with the last ten years of Robert Downey Jnr interacting with the fans and the audiences at premiers, events, comic-cons, interviews, etc. Look at how humble, thankful and charming RDJ is when he talks about the opportunity he's been given to portray Iron Man and Tony Stark for all the fans out there. That difference probably explains why so many people have been riled up about this.
