Captain Marvel (2019)

Wow that boycott by internet man-babies really affected the movie....

Disney's release of Marvel Studios's Captain Marvel gave the domestic box office a much needed jolt after the first two months of the year struggled to compete with 2018. The twenty-first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivered the franchise's seventh largest opening weekend of all time while grossing more over its first three days than the combined totals of any previous three-day weekend so far this year.

With an estimated $153 million, Captain Marvel proved a massive success, bringing in the third highest March opening of all-time, and don't be surprised to see actuals push the film's total a bit higher come Monday afternoon. Historically, the performance ranks among openings that include The Dark Knight ($158.4m opening), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158m opening), Rogue One ($155m opening) and The Hunger Games($152.5m opening), the four of which representing a total domestic gross ranging from $408-530+ million.

On average, the 20 previous releases in the MCU delivered a 2.76x multiplier, which would suggest Captain Marvel's run would finish around $422 million based on the film's domestic opening weekend. That said, should it manage to top Iron Man 3's $409 million domestic run it would rank as the fifth largest film in the MCU and, in terms of genre competition, it has a few weeks all to itself before WB's Shazam! opens on April 5.

It is interesting to note exits, which show the film playing to an opening weekend crowd that was 55% male and 45% female, which, along with Black Panther and Ant-Man and the Wasp, is the smallest gender divide among films in the MCU, but nowhere near the 52% female crowd Wonder Woman played to back in June 2017. Additionally, 64% of the film's opening weekend crowd was aged 25 or older, which ranks as one of the older audiences for an MCU film, while it earned an "A" CinemaScore.

Internationally, Captain Marvel delivered an estimated $302 million, making it the fifth highest international opening weekend of all-time and the sixth largest worldwide debut ever. Leading the way was the film's opening in China, which is estimated at $89.3 million, which ranks as the third largest MCU opening weekend ever in the market behind Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. Behind China is South Korea with a $24.1 million debut followed by the UK ($16.8m), Brazil ($13.4m), Mexico ($12.8m), Australia ($10.7m), Indonesia ($10.1m), Russia ($9.8m), France ($9.2m), Germany ($7.8m), India ($6.9m), Thailand ($6.6m), Taiwan ($6.4m), Philippines ($6.3m), Malaysia ($5.6m), Italy ($5.5m) and Hong Kong ($5.2m). Next weekend the film will open in Japan serving as the only market where the film has yet to be released.

So much for their "Get woke, go broke" rubbish.

I watch it last night, really enjoyed it. A nice handling of the backstory, feeds everything in seamlessly to the MCU and found the humour to be very well placed too.

A lot better than I expected after being rather underwhelmed by the trailers.

I really enjoyed it as did my Son. Some nice laughs, a nice tribute to Stan Lee as well and that end credit scene. Brie was good as well and nowhere near as wooden as people were worried about. Overall a good Marvel film but it's no Winter Soldier.

Also a real shame they couldn't give Melinda May a cameo. There was one scene in the stairwell where they could have easily put her in just for a second but they fluffed it.

Most of the people who hate it hasn't seen it.

Apparently Rotten Tomatoes deleted almost 50% of the early reviews (which was mostly negative) because they were submitted before the film was even out. Go figure. As Vincent pointed out their boycott did absolutely nothing to it.

The truth doesn't matter to some when it comes to "fighting trolls". It also means folks feel like they are ONLY allowed to like the film just so that you don't get smeared with with "angry white man" label, regardless or you actual sex, skin colour or age.

It is surprising however to see so many positive reviews all using extremely similar wording to the effect of "I don't know what the fuss was about". Just look at the number of reviews using that sentance (or similar) across review sites everywhere.

For my own review - 5/10 - better than Thor 2 or Captain America 1 and an OK marvel film which neither shines nor dulls the MCU with its presence. The story was weak but the cast did well with what they had, the humour was OK but there were quite a few "what, why'd they do that?" plot moments due to the story not being the best. Brie Larson was passable but her character has virtually no charisma on screen so if the MCU is going to use her as the "the lead" for post End-Game they need to find someone who can write for her better, like Whedon etc. The effects were up to the usual MCU quality for the 3rd act CGI-fest and the 90's music was cool but I found a lot of the 90's stuff "cooler" than it actually was in the film.

So overall, it's OK, not great but not bad.

Watched it tonight. Thought it was another great MCU film. Looking forward to the next Avengers movie.

Can't see what all the negativity was about. From seeing the trailers. It was way better than I was expecting.

I guess they can pretty easily use some code to find any "review" that says "I won't watch this because XYZ" and delete. Maybe they even delete reviews that just give a score and don't leave any criticism.

Saw this yesterday, another decent mid ranking Marvel movie. Probably 6.5/10. Was mostly entertained throughout. Can't say I felt there was any 'feminist agenda' being pushed in the movie either. Danvers definitely seemed OP by the end though :).

Didn't like how the timeline broke though and had SHIELD called SHIELD already in 1995. That was a running joke all through Iron Man 1 that they were working on the name as it was a mouth full and only came up with the acronym later.

Flerkin cat was the best bit though, my wife wants one now haha

Good point, that hadn't occurred to me at all.

Edit - Just re-reading about it on Wikipedia:

It is first referenced in Iron Man when Agent Phil Coulson attempts to talk with Tony Stark about his escape from captivity. As a running gag, the agency is always referred to by its full name, followed by remarks to the effect that it needs something shorter; near the film's end, Coulson stops Pepper Potts midway through saying it and says, "Just call us SHIELD."

Maybe other agents did use the acronym but Coulson just had a stick up his ass about saying the full title?

That didn't need to be spoiler tags really.

And realistically, at least in the comic canon, SHIELD has existed for many decades, with variations as to what the letters mean.

Can someone spoilerise me with regards to why everyone is loving the cat for some reason? :) Haven't seen the flick, not sure if I really want to so I'm ok with any tagged spoilers.

Which Avenger do we think is a Skrull????

My wild guess would be that Thalos' daughter is now Black Widow - Green eye colour (skrull eye colour "don't change your eye colour"), right age, knows/trusts Fury etc but in Age of Ultron we saw her back story so maybe that was a lie, maybe not, who knows.

The Cat

It's not a cat, it's a very lethal alien which Fury coos and ahhhh's over until he finds out when it eats people/things - not as "show stealing" as it sounds but a nice chuckle
