Car Damaged Due To Garage Incompetence

I'm in the you should have checked before driving off camp here. Should check your car before driving it anyway, it's common sense, i know i check mine in the mornings to make sure there is no obvious problems. Only takes 2 mins and can save a lot of grief

Well there are plenty of things that you could And probably should check that would take longer than 2 minutes. Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it :)

To the people saying that they would have checked it, what if it had been a wheel that came off because it wasn't bolted back on correctly? Or if he had a new exhaust fitted and it came off half way home? What would you say under those circumstances?

It depends what sort of outfit they run. If it's a small local place I would have thought they might admit fault and sort it for you, rather than get a bad name.

I had a garage do suspension work for me and they didn't tighten one of the hub nuts. Whole lot came away going round a corner into the petrol station. They were apologetic and offered a free service etc.

I wouldn't be too hopeful though as roof repairs can be expensive.

Because it takes two seconds and is clearly visible from just looking at a car?

The garage should have insurance for that and I'd be doing my utmost to get them to pay out. That is going to be one expensive repair there otherwise.

Solicitor letter to the garage would be my next step if they refused to help on first contact.
See if that persuades them...
If not, the next letter would be a "see you in court"

Not at all, it's just a lesson the OP has learnt the hard way.

its not a lesson he should ever be taught

the whole reason people take their cars to garages and get MOTs is because they expect the car to be safe roadworthy afterwards. same as how if you took your PC into OCUK for a repair/upgrade you wouldnt expect it back with a fan disconnected or the psu set to 110

the garage has made a big mistake and they should be looking to claim from their insurance to cover the damage they caused

last year a lad at works wheel came off and he ended up in a ditch upside down on the way back from his MOT , the garage originally tried to pass the blame but he won once it went legal. the garage got off lucky tbh. someone could have been killed. and the same in the OPs case.
