Car door dings

I've literally pulled someone out of a meeting to have a go at them because they left a lovely crease and a bit of their paint on one of my old Subaru's.

They'd left their reg plate with reception as they were visiting. I asked reception for the details, told them what happened, and she went mental at them too. :D

Thankfully the £50 he gave me covered the dent repair as my paint wasn't damaged...

Cars do seem to be getting wider which doesn't help the matter. It stresses me out though when I'm in one of our cars, so much so that it feels quite liberating when I'm in my beat up company hand me down which I just park wherever I like :o

I generally when possible park far away, from where ever I need to be, I don't mind few mins walk better than cost of potential repairs.

I just get the Mrs moaning that I parked in her words miles away

How common/frequent is this happening to people here?

I've picked up one on my Clio in about 3yrs because I'm so anal about where I park and who I park next to. People carriers, vans, Vauxhalls ( :p ) etc are typically a red flag and I avoid parking next to them entirely, my girlfriend on the other hand will park next to anything and always closest to the door of where she's visiting, every month I find a new ding on her car.

I do the same yet it's amazing how often some complete penis will park next to you. Even in a near empty car park! I always find it's some old sod too.

Years ago I was part of a Fiesta ST club and about 8 of us met in a car park that was entirely empty and had what must've been easily 500+ spaces. Some berk drove in and parked directly next to one of us who were all in a row taking pictures, I asked him if he was for real and he couldn't understand what a weird thing it was to park where he did.

I often wonder if this is tactical :p 'This guy has parked miles away from everyone, he isn't going to damage my car if he get's back before I do so that is one side of my car safe' :p

So far (2 years 2 months) not a mark on the S3, but I’m very VERY particular about where I park it (end spaces, wider spaces such as in corners, opposite end of the car park etc)

Not really an option for me with a 3 year old. Also my wife drives it more than me. She does try though.

Unlucky LiE :(

I try to be so careful when opening doors and also pay a lot of attention to where I park. However if the Sportage picked up a small ding, I'd probably not mind too much as while I don't like to drive around in some ghetto rat look crap wagon, I might as well accept the fact that a few scuffs are almost inevitable when driving in the city and save up a few dings for my friendly ding man to sort out all at the same time. The diamond cut alloy scuffs are a story for another thread.

The 911 on the other hand...

A bit of luck is involved in avoiding parking dings, I always try to park in a good a space as possible. I had my Golf 11 years with no parking dings and still on the original windscreen. Car after this had a parking ding within two months, got that fixed got another one a week later sorted that touch wood avoided them since then but it is getting a replacement windscreen next week.

Wife got a new car, within two weeks had a parking ding ironically after I moved it from a space I thought looked tight to a completely empty part of the car park came back to a car tight on each side and a dent in the rear 1/4 panel.

Luckily found a really good local paint less dent removal guy who is great, £40-50 to remove a ding/creases. I thought the one the wife's car got would need filling and painting but he got it out.

Spaces not big enough mainly, although not an excuse as I manage to get in and out of my car without hitting other cars. The other issue is people not managing to park in the middle of the space, instead parking right on the line.

Years ago when I got my scoob new I used to park when I went shoping at the far end of the really oversized tesco car park

I was normally the only car in the whole row. One week I come out to find there were 2 cars for a change, and someone had parked right next to me!
So the following weeks onwards I parked in the middle of 2 spaces. Then i came out to find someone had parked next to me again, ignored the lines and parked normal distance away from me.

Honestly I think some people are so bad at parking they use other cars in order to line up where they should park.

If I was in charge I would make the spots ever widening as you got further away from the shop. Leave the fatties and lazy to fight over the micro spots right by the doors and let those who respect their (and others cars) to have nice wide ones at the other end of the car park.

That's because cars have gotten bigger over the years and spaces haven't.

America has huge car parking spaces, their 'compact' spaces are the equivalent of our standard spaces.

I parked in a multi-storey in the centre of Manchester yesterday and could barely get into my car despite both my car and the one next to it being smack bang in the centre of the spaces and neither of them being particularly large cars!

I use a cheap runaround when parking at the station - the amount of dents accumulated from other car owners. Colleagues take the pee, stating a car is a car!

Mine are nothing flashy, I just try to look after things. A colleague has a brand new M3 and parks it at the station - it makes me wince...

As mentioned, people have a different perception.

I'll never forget that when the Jaguar XF came out a few years back. The first I had seen was parked out of the way at a supermarket car park. Anyway a few minutes later when walking back to my own car - it had a massive ding in the side.
Whether out of sheer malice (I guess so). I really felt for the owner. :(

Those won't do a lot tbh, it might prevent paint damage but you'll still end up with dents.

What you need is a metal bar running down the outside of the car :D

I jokingly thought about a Defender as I have always been a fan and looking for an excuse...

It would probably be nicked when leaving it at a station all day, so dings would be the last of my worries - also a small matter of used car prices soon brought me back to reality.
