Car insurance

At what point will people stop saying: "You're young just suck it up"?

"Hai guise, my insurance for a 1.1 saxo is £12,000!! Argh!!"

"You're young suck it up".

I think the point is, it never used to be this expensive. Hell, when I was 17 only 5 years ago I was paying circa £1500 for a 1.6 focus as my first car. Allowing for inflation (using the inflation calculator from the BoE website) this should now be about £1746. Now we all know it's not that straight forward and areas etc come into it. But I have not heard of one 17 year old paying under £2200 for a crappy 1.0 car nevermind a 1.6 focus.

Now it's all very easy to say P.I claims have rocketted up premiums. But the ABI states the recent rise in legal costs contributes to a whole £40 extra in premiums. A lot when you're 8682 years old and paying 10p for insurance but barely noticable otherwise. The same source also points to young drivers seeing a 58% increase in premiums. So, taking my example. Are 58% more people crashing now? Or are 58% more people claiming P.I under a tort which has existed for centuries and was certainly very active in 2006?

I know exactly what you mean about this. This is the response of the older generations who couldn't give two steaming piles of excretion. Its not like us young people are on decent wages.

I should have stuck with my motorbike, much cheaper and much more fun. £1500 plus quotes for a 1.3 fiesta, at 21 years of age with no accidents isn't fair.

edit: A friend of mine has written off 2 cars. 2 more than me, and because he has 4 years driving experience to my nearly 2, his insurance is lower. Life isn't fair.

It's absolutely ridiculous how much the change in price is depending on how long you've held your licence, and even a few months difference can cost a few hundred pounds difference. I managed to get £800 now for a 10 month quote with 1 year ncb but is it ok to say you've held your licence 1 month longer than you have to save a few hundred pounds? It's not like their losing money out of it..

Its also amazing the difference between crashing a car and not crashing a car...

Seriously your paying money to indemnify yourself if you misjudge a turn and slide into a Veyron (ok worst case scenario I know) how long you've had a licence is a good (not perfect obv) way of estimating somebody's driving experience.

And no what you said is not ok, its called fraud and its illegal :P

I can hardly believe anyone is honest when getting insurance quotes at my age, at least I'm the main driver. With the number of people with no insurance at all, I'm hardly committing a crime, it's more like getting the money back I should never have to pay out in the first place if everyone had insurance.

Worse thing that could happen is they find out I've had my licence for less time, but I just say it was an input error.:)

Also if anyone is moronic enough to drive an expensive car like a Veyron, they should be paying £100,000 to insure it, not me since I didn't ask them to drive it.

Yeah, you're absolutely right, that's the worst thing that could happen. Never mind having a serious crash, writing off your and someone else's car and injuring someone, and your insurance company turning round and saying "you lied, you're not insured" (as they could and would, as "input error" is not a valid excuse). That wouldn't be worse at all.

totally agree with above, simply ignorance wouldnt work, you are supposed to check through everything when your documents are sent though. so you saying it was an input error and they would say you double checked them your fault you now owe us a lot of money

Why on earth does the typical 17 year need a car?

When I was in 6th form as far as I could tell cars were a status symbol, and part of a ritual that involved impressing your friends by driving to McDonalds for lunch.

seriously?

having a car is like the best feeling i ever had, I felt truly free for a bit. No longer was i restricted to how far the buses went i could go pretty much anywhere i wanted wherever and whenever i wanted, Liberating for a 17 year old :D

so you can go to all the places that 17 year olds want to, without having to take the bus or hitch a lift from their parents. So:

Cinema
Restaurants
Shops
Theme Parks
Road Trips

Seriously why is it so hard to understand why a 17 year old would want to go to somewhere in a car instead of by bus ?

No one wants to sit on a bus next to a smelly person, that is a fact!

It really is stupid though, look at this:
  • 1 year and 11 months = £853.93
  • 2 years = £795.63 (-£58.3) (1 Month difference)
  • 2 years and 5 months = £795.63 (-£0) (5 Month difference)
  • 2 years and 10 months = £782.38 (-£13.25)

I'm sorry but is that not completely stupid, where is the sense in paying that extra £50 it seems completely unnecessary just for one month difference? Add another £50 for 1 year and 10 months.
