Career In The Army part 2 (Hopefully)

O shut up, how about our right to live? As this country runs out of cheap energy i bet you will be one of the first people to moan about where the next few millions barrels of oil is coming from.

Well that's the problem because if our politicians were honest about the invasion of Iraq, many more soldiers lives could have been saved. Many soldeirs lives have been lost trying to bring democracy to a country and people that aren't very democratic. Maybe we should just station our troops around the oil fields and be done with?

When/if the time comes those same soldiers will be back at home deffending your own homes and land keeping invaders out while you are tucked up under your desk crying for help..

Sorry but if our country was being invaded and I had access to an assault rifle, I'd be making a contribution towards defending it.

If you want to debate politics please go to SC. Lets leave this thread for Bakesy to update everyone on his application process

It's not really politics. I have many friends who have been in the army and served in conflict zones. I've seen firsthand the mental scars it can leave and the comtempt some now have for the services.

All of them say they'd never fight for the government again, which is what you'll ultimately end up doing regardless of the intentions you have when joining.

Why i want to join the army:
Something ive always wanted to do!
Make true friends
Have a purpose.
Have some stories to tell.

Bakes that's all well and good, but when your in some foreign country the other side of the planet with bullets flying left, right and center and exploisions blowing your eardrums and seeing your 'true friends' getting killed and the best thing you can hope for is to survive with no injuries, you'll have a very harsh wake up call and start asking yourself 'wtf am I doing here'. That's 'a story to tell' from a friend who served in Bosnia and is pretty much the reality of war.

They already do this?

To be honest, if they had came out and said we are running out of oil and that the country is going to fall to bits in 5 years and we need to invade iraq and likes to get some more.

Would you agree with it?

Being an officer wasn't about GCSEs or anything, it was about degrees
Alas, that is incorrect. If you don't have the base qualifications then it can be very difficult to get a foot in the door. Furthermore, you only need a degree for the most technical jobs.

Reason i ask is, because i feel that if i apply to be an officer one i finish my degree, its unlikely that i will get accepted (due to my lack of gcses) but if i do, although ill get better pay, i feel i will lack a lot of the hands on experience of the technical stuff. where as if i work my way through the ranks up to WO and then become a late commision officer, i would get hands on experience with the technical stuff, and get managing experience once i become an officer, both of which would be great for civilian jobs.
As long as you have the minimum grades for GCSEs/A Levels then it is highly recommended to go straight for Officer. I would wholeheartedly not recommend going for the ranks with the intention of going for Officer one day. If you want Officer, go for it, the worst they could do is turn you down, then you can go for the ranks.

Well I Know you can get in without a degree, but what I mean is about 80% of the junior officers at sandhurst do have degrees. But afaik, you do need A Levels, I was told that it was a minimum of 140 UCAS points to get accepted for an officer. GCSE's are neither here nor there when It come to officer selection(with in reason of course).

That's My Plan :( haha.
But I dont want to be an officer at the moment, I want to be in the ranks for several years before id consider going for officer, and if I don't become one, I wouldn't mind, would like to get to a WO1 though heh.
But yeah, if you are wanting to be an officer in the army, go for it directly. Going though the ranks isn't the way to get it if its what you're specifially wanting.

Update:
Im still waiting on them after giving them my medical forms about 4-5 weeks ago.But i knew that part of the process would take the longest. But the good news is im off on the 30th october till the 2nd november on a "Look At Life" course. Basically its a 4 day course in pirbright, surrey with the ColdStream Guards, so im very excited:)

Sounds good mate. I've still not heard back from my medical mind, after nearly 4 months!

Not that it matters anyways, I've got to get my neck tattoo removed before I can get back in, they changed the ******* rules on the 1st of this month about where tattoos are allowed :(. So I'm moving back in with my parents so I can get laser surgery to get it removed heh.

On the plus note, the medical should be valid for how ever long it takes to get it removed, so that means I wont have to wait around when I re-submit my application.

Zheka, If you have any questions feel free to ask me. I'm helping Blighter at the moment as he is looking at joining the army(thanks to me :p) lol.

bakes0310 at the moment I have no Idea. I would like to aim for something like the Royal Marines but its too early to say at the moment. I would be happy to get in "just" the infantry, but why not to aim higher.
I'm thinking of training for at least 6 months before applying. I'm 30 years old and probably will not have another chance. So I want to be ready and give it my best shot. I will try to arrange a chat with the local recruitment officer next week.
And thanks Ghosteh If I will have a question I will ask here or email you if its ok. Hope you will get your tattoos sorted without a problems.
