Career in the Forces? (IT Related)

Just got back from PRTC, will post up information tomorrow.

The beds are a bit crap but they're adequate. Bathrooms are great, food is amazing. I'm knackered but it's all mental tiredness.

I'll have passed out by Christmas :D

Can't wait to just get stuck in now. This is all feels like wasted time.

haha cool, hopefully ill be passed out/practically done by xmas, my life is currently pointless, iv told them i can be away whenever they say - so hopefully ill get some dropouts place and get in even sooner :D

Was very weird, but brilliant.

The reason it was weird was due to the fact that I've been doing so much research. With interviews/tests etc you can basically know everything they're going to say/ask/do however at PRTC it's very difficult to get a real idea of what it's like before you're there. I had a concrete picture of what it'd be like in my head and it not being exactly like that shook me a little.

Saying that, it was absolutely great. I was in awe pretty much the entire time however there was a very large amount of standing around waiting for other groups to finish up in the place we were about to move into.

There were about 300 of us on the PRTC and we were marched around properly in time. If we got it wrong we got shouted at, simple as that. The discipline really threw some guys off, it seems they didn't really look up much about what training camps are like.

Met some great lads and had a really good look around the camp so I know exactly what to expect when I start. Can't wait to just get cracking now!

Retain this attitude throughout training and you shall really enjoy it. "Play the Game" so to speak. Remember your training staff are tasked to make you all achieve set goals, and that is all. Out of training they're just your usual corporals and sergeants, once I was passed out I was out on the lash with quite a few of them. What is amazing is how some people really take it so seriously or find it all so difficult, I even heard of one guy who tried to commit suicide  Everyone is different though I suppose.

When do you begin?

Yeah I was really suprised when I spoke to some of the potential recruits who were really shocked by it. I just don't see what there is to be shocked by really! Maybe it's because I'm from a service family or due to the fact that I've lived away from home for 2 years now and worked full time.

I start on October 1st.

Best advice I can give is, be good at ironing and sewing prior to arriving. A lot of lads moaned about lack of sleep on the course but all the training objectives are easily achieved within the set time and with a decent 6 - 7 hours sleep. People just got hung up on silly trivial things.

If you have any questions add me to MSN :D

EDIT: Is that your msn in your trust?

Thought I would revive this thread yet again.

Passed my interview, medical and got my fitness next Monday.

Really looking for some guys that have been here, I have been told that I could be gone with a few months. Realisticly when could I be going? Is it the case of the first date or is more likely to be next year now?

Its hit home now and more excited about every day it gets closer.

Your PRTC will probably be in November, with you joining RTS in 2009.

That said, some people have their RTS date 6 days after their PRTC... you can't be sure really.

What trade are you applying as?

:edit: First weekend off by the way, it's tough but good fun.

I have been looking closely at joining the RAF as an ICT specialist too.

One thing thats has been worrying me is do they do Cisco and Microsoft qualifications!?

Started ripping up the polish from the stairway floors yet?

Here's a tip, bucket of hot water with washing up liquid...mop the stairwell, leave it wet for about 10-15minutesm then try it, it comes up loads easier :D

Nah, no one is silly enough to polish the soles of their boots.

You sure about that? ;) Only in training, granted, but we had two pairs: everyday boots, and "best boots". The best boots were kept bulled to a mirror finish and the soles were certainly polished for inspections.

I'm talking about my intake, and yes I'm 100% sure. I think they've actually mentioned polishing the soles of shoes/boots by saying it's completely pointless and we're not to do it.

Firefighters and Police have 2 pairs but only 1 pair of shoes whereas everyone else has 1 pair of boots but 2 pairs of shoes.
