carling cup football thread 22-23 *spoilers*

Why would winning a trophy they played no part in getting convince Fabregas/Arshavin/etc to stay?

I did say both Fa and Carling, I also called into question the idea of putting out a crappy reserve team when we desparately need to win a cup to convince our better players theres any future for them here.

Some people might deduce, I don't know, that I was suggesting we played those players in said cup and then won it, it might be a sign the club can win anything at all.

Even so, our "back up" team going out in the first round isn't really a rallying cry to our strength in depth and all the massive youth talent we have coming through is it.

Also considering no one quoted me, or mentioned my name before Gimp replied, the only way he could have seen my post is if well, I wasn't on ignore......

Or maybe he just posts that same thing in every thread on the forum just in case.

No, there wasn't, well we were all on here, bemoaning getting in a useless, barely plays, expensive waste of space instead of getting someone, you know decent.

Supposedly he's on around 40k a week aswell, if we'd given 40k extra a week to Flamini, he would have stayed, and been some use, aswell as not costing a transfer and signing fee :(

A.C. Milan are a giant of a football club, they have a team full of World Cup winners and fantastic players, they have a rich history, why wouldn't a player want to play for them? Arsenal are a good club, but they ain't no A.C. Milan.

At the time I very much thought Fergie had got one over on Wenger, and that Wenger's dementia is clearly worsening.

Yes, because Mr Wanger has no idea what he's doing, maybe he made a mistake? Everyone makes mistakes. Fergie has made mistakes.

Frankly with WBA playing so well at the moment, I'm not at all convinced we'll win, theres some real quality, but Vela's only just back from injury, Silvestre/Senderos haven't ever played together(AFAIK) and haven't got any match fitness.

West Brom are indeed playing very well, I don't really think there will be much point debating the winner, because Arsenal have the better side, even a weakened side should be able to brush aside West Brom.

Ramsey's the only player out of those whose first team quality and has played any minutes in the past month or two, which to me is very different to previous years of playing a mostly experienced(playing together) reserves side who play every week with 2-3 regulars added in for experience, like Gilberto/Toure/Denilson.

Its the weakest/strangest most disjointed side we've ever put out :(

Considering this and the FA cup are our only shot at silverware and a year where, well, we HAVE to win something to have any chance of Fabregas/Arshavin/Gallas/RVP etc etc actually wanting to stay rather than giving up, its madness to put out that kind of team.

Has Mr Wanger announced his squad?

BBC said:
Arsenal are expected to field a team mostly made up of youngsters.
The more senior players in contention for an appearance include defenders Philippe Senderos and Mikael Silvestre.
West Bromwich Albion could give a debut to versatile Chile international Gonzalo Jara, who can now play after receiving his visa.
But full-back Joe Mattock has been ruled out with an ankle injury and Chris Brunt will also miss the match as he is nursing a knee problem.

I expected a young team, made up of reserves and fringe players. Still a strong squad.

I am in half a mind about these players.

I don't think Arshavin would leave, he's just joined.
I think if Barca came asking about Fabregas he'd be silly not to go, I think it would really hurt Arsenal, but they've failed to win anything of note ( league & champions league )

There is also a 'view post' option if I feel the need to read your drivel and as I'm at work and bored I thought I would read your crap.

A mistake I will not be making again.

:D

I don't have him on ignore, I use his pots to cheer me up when I'm feeling down.

Although, the constant Diaby/Song/Wenger rants are getting a little boring now. He's funny none the less, especially when he says "I don't want to write too much"... And then writes another 27 paragraphs! :p

Wojciech Szczesny
James Shea
Philippe Senderos
Mikael Silvestre
Kieran Gibbs
Armand Traore
Kerrea Gilbert
Kyle Bartley
Mark Randall
Francis Coquelin
Craig Eastmond
Emmanuel Frimpong
Nacer Barazite
Aaron Ramsey
Gilles Sunu
Jack Wilshere
Carlos Vela
Sanchez Watt

Fairly young squad I'd say:confused:

AC Milan, have gone on to win lots recently? No, they aren't a big team, big history, but not even remotely thought of as contenders for anything right now, ageing squad with little improvement in recent years, been on the slide for several years. The fact is they offered more money, and so he left, I can understand him going, I understand the draw, I'm also fairly convinced he'd have stayed with a proper contract offer.

I also said that was something he could have done with the money, not having Flamini doesn't make that 40k a week on Silvestre any less of a waste, in the slightest.

yes Wenger has basically announced the squad on a video on the Arsenal homepage, as for winning because they are playing well? I think of the starting squad maybe 3 players have had any time on the pitch this year, the CB partnership hasn't played together before, the central midfield hasn't played together before, the front 3 haven't played together before, several of the players haven't played a game since preseason even for the reserves.

You can't look at the first team, or the reserves form and somehow translate that to a completely different team.

As I said, we've done well in early rounds of the Carling cup playing our reserve team thats played together for a year or more, and maybe 1-2 FIRST team players often for a little experience, the team tonight, has neither of those benefits, which is worrying to say the least.

While Toure/Gilberto in previous years offered real first team quality to the mix, Silvestre offers hilarious mistakes.

I don't think Arshavin would necessarily look for a move but he's mentioned the tax/wage issue, and frankly he's just so damn good and proven in a better league now that he'd not be a risk, that a half dozen clubs would be happy to offer 30mil for him now, and he'd be mad not to go to a Barca/Real/Inter, etc, etc, and make at least twice the cash in the process.

Fabregas would be mad not to go, we won't refuse a 40mil bid and without even a single cup won this year, what the hell do we have to offer over Barca. He's shown loyalty, he could have left anytime he wanted in the past 3 years had he pushed to leave. He's hoped we'd improve, we haven't at some stage he wants some real success and he deserves it, I'll be gutted to see him leave for the team, but happy for him to go somewhere and win things.

My head is hoping for a valiant display but beaten by the odd goal so Leeds can concentrate on the league.

Obviously my heart says different.

Just hope we don't get pumped.

A.C. Milan, are a massive historical club, one of the biggest clubs in Italy, have a squad full of World Cup winning talent, and happens to be in an absolutely wonderful city, has a very nice standard of living. I *think* it wasn't just about money.

Yes you have, West Brom are a good Championship side, Arsenal even with a team of reserves and fringe players should have more then enough to see them off.

He's a good player, not quite what you make him out to be, but still a very good player. I think he'll stick around for another season or so at Arsenal, even without winning the League / Champions League.

I don't know why he's still at the club, blind loyalty. If he wants to be remembered, and progress as a footballer he should move to Barcelona.

Arsenal, aren't the team they were when they went on that 49 game unbeaten run.

For me the Carling Cup now is more of a priority (so to speak) than the FA Cup

At least with the Carling Cup there's the excitement of seeing the younger players in a big stage whereas the FA Cup games up until the Semi Finals are just a nuisance, a bore and detract from the priority competitions (Premiership & Champions League). I guess in a way it's shame that the FA Cup has reached that for supporters of the bigger clubs but the way of the times I guess.

Alas I reckon our team will be...

GK: PIG

RB: Neville
CB: Brown
CB: Evans
LB: De Leat (hope he gets the nod over Fabio)

RM: Welbeck
CM: Gibson
CM: Carrick (needs to get his confidence going again)
LM: Nani

CF: Macheda
CF: Owen

Owen to score a couple after Sundays game :)
