Looks as if he's starting there tonight, what do you think.

Personally I think its a good idea on svens part if its works it will be great for the WC, he reads the game well, is strong, is a good passer of the ball and keeps it simple. Time will tell tonight but I think he will do there well. (however I also thing he should be a close second choice at CB just behig JT and well ahead of Rio and sol.

He's most likely up to the task, and it suits our team much better to play a holding midfielder, but why not just play Carrick there instead, who's natural position it is?

Carragher can play anywhere along the back four or as a holding midfielder. He started his career as a holding midfielder for Liverpool. He will perform the role extremely well but the reliance will be on the other midfielders to provide the creative impetus. Carra won't be making box to box runs, just mopping up in midfield and playing the sensible ball out of trouble.

To be honest though, I'd rather he played centre half with Terry and play a more natural midfielder in that role such as Carrick.

Apologies.

I still think carrick is a bit lightweight to play there, a sissoko type player would be perfect, he has been immense. but i think carragher has played there before and could allow the other lads to get on with the creativity and attacking. Could also cover for terry when he decides to go on one of his roams!

Well I guess as a friendly it is the best time to test something like this out anyway. :)

King would have been my choice for that position were he fit, and he's a defender these days too, so Carra should hopefully do well. Who's playing alongside him? Lampard?

I'm sure he will do a good job as he seems to have a good footballing brain & can turn to most defensive positions. Makele & Chelsea have proved that that system works well if your players know how to do it, my point being that England haven't played that way very often & it seems to be a bit late to turn to it know. I guess it'll just be for tonights game though to see how we do with it:)

This again proves that Eriksson is an absolute idiot. Why come up with this idea 10 days before the start of the world cup, if he wanted to use a defensive midfielder why didn't he include in the squad ledley king who he played there previously? why has he selected so many midfielders in the squad and then in the end chooses a defender to play in midfield? Why the heck is Hargreaves in the squad if he's considered behind even carragher for this position?
Maybe he's realised that Carrick is not up to it at this level, and maybe finally that hargreaves is just crap. Still Carragher is a slow player and is a defender.

he has played there before he is very versitile and think he can do a job, ledly king is a defender to, also he's injured if I'm not mistaken. I know who I would rather have in any case, only one of them has been absolutely rock solid in the PL and CL for the last 2 seasons.....

Would you rather sven didnt try it at all, then it wouldent be an option. he might as well give it a go and see if it works! I like the risk taking sven. When he plays it safe he gets critisised, when he tries diferent things if a meaningless friendly he gets critisesed!

King is injured, also id rather he trys stuff like this out 10 days before the world cup than once its started.

Bad idea. He's not fast enough and he can't pass well enough.

He might be able to make up for his lack of pace through his reading of the game. Thats how Makelele gets away with it, but Carra never struck me as having a particularly good footballing brain. Just a no frills defender.

Carrick is perfect for the role. He's big, he's pretty quick and his short passing is excellent. He can even run with the ball. His only problem is his range of passing.

King got the chance to go DM for England because Glen Hoddle had him playing there for club.

Not only does a DM need to be good at tackles, defending, they also need to be good at carrying the ball. At international level, teams like Hungary will let him have the ball and drop back, clogging his passes in midfield. Never seen Carragher go on a "mazy run".

OK, its friendly so try it, but Carrick needs some proper time out there if he is going to deputise for Rooney in the group stages.

He actually first got into the team as a RM and rumour has it he was signed as a schoolboy as a striker. He is gradually working his way back to being a keeper.
Anyway after his brief cameo as a attacking player he played the fist 3-4 seasons as a defensive midfielder, so all the people saying Sven should have put King into the squad to play that role because he is played there more is wrong. As for Carrick i don't see him as a defensive midfielder; he sits in front of the back four and tries to dictate the play and just pass the ball about but won't break up attacks where as Carra will. Therefore for this formation and team i can't think of anyone better (maybe Parker) to do that role.

IIRC Sven said this would be his first choice team; so if Carrick isn't picked today it doesn't look likely he will get much of a chance in the group stages.

No offence but you sound like you've never seen carragher play! Carra is an excellent passer of the ball and extremely good at reading the play.

None taken. I don't agree with you at all. He's a hoofer and clogger, he just happens to be very good at it :)

Glad you posted that actually, as long as he can thread a ball inside the right fullback so Cole (either), who can cut inside, bring the keeper out and pull the ball back to Crouch so he can baloon it.... im happy. ;)
