Cat 11.11

Yep i never have any serious issues with ati drivers either.

Ive been using ATI since my radeon 9800, and ive yet to have a driver issue.

I've been a user of both and tbh the only show stopping problems I've had have been with NV cards...

Not having many performance issues with BF3 atm so I'll hold fire til more have tried them

What do you class as a very old game ?

was cod 1 which is a class game and for a while you couldnt play it on newer than 10.4 ati drivers the game was nearly dead online so sort of exceptable as the player base probably wasnt enough to warrant a fix straight away but.... they did fix it in a later driver and thats only real issues i had with ati ever.

had probably two other what i would call issues with nvidia and thats with nearly 15 years gaming on pc now :p

both are about same issue wise but ati seem to get blown out of proportion a lot

I’ve had ATI cards since back when the ATI Rage 3D was kicking around with the ATI all in wonder which I coupled up with a 3Dfx voodoo II at the time.

I’ve also had a 9700 pro and currently got an ATI 5870 and ATI 5650M and they are perfectly fine solid video cards however as always with ATI their software does at times let them down.

The 9700 pro suffered from serious GPU VDU recover issues in Windows XP which was really annoying and eventually found to be a bug with software, hardware and BIOS for mine and many other users machines which was fixed by turning VDU recover off.

The ATI 5870 had serious flicking issues with Windows 7 when using dual screens that was eventually fixed with CATS 10.4 I think. It was very annoying as it meant half my Windows 7 desktop flickered if I left my second display connected.

My ATI 5650 has actually been a rather stable little workhorse for a laptop GPU, however it did display some rather ugly issues with RAGE which was eventually fixed with CATS 11.10 preview 2 and 3 and then broken with official 11.10 CATS and now CATS 11.11 do seem to have resolved this.

I also remember COD 1 not working until a recent release of another CAT package that did fix it.

I’ve also found that MLAA and surface optimizations are not worthwhile as they do seem to affect performance.

I’ve not seen any green flickering in BF3 for any CATS I’ve used, so I do agree ATI video cards are troublesome at times but they do eventually fix all known issues or release some type of workaround.

Price per performance I’ve found ATI to be a good balance, I’ve had two NV cards and whilst they were both very good cards they were very expensive when I got them. The 8800GTX was IMO horrendously overpriced at the time, but phew – what a card it actually was…

However, ask me about driver issues with the two NV cards I’ve had, neither gave me troubles other then hurting my pocket lol

even though these drivers + caps have broken rage for me somewhat, bf3 is definitely running much better - gpu usage is glued to 98-99% across 3 gpu's, and it feels smooth, didn't notice any fps drop either.

98-99% I want that too :( can I ask what motherboard CPU and memory you are using please.
On my second go at BF3 on 11.11 cap1 yes did feel bit more consistent to me looked like a better average FPS did not dip so low.

Uninstall 11.10's
Uninstall CAP4's

reboot into safe mode and use Driver Cleaner to remove the dregs, reboot and it blue screens all the time, usually within 15 seconds of booting to desktop, fantastico! Just had to reinstall windows :/ :(

I thought driver cleaner was considered a no go these days?

I haven't owned an ATi card for years but do you really still have to go through all this rigmarole just to update drivers?

With Nvidia it's just a case of download drivers then install drivers over the top, you even have the option to do a clean install if you want.
