Catalyst 7.7 Released

Soft shadows in fear were pretty crap anyway, the difference from hard to soft was a very slight blur effect at the cost of a large fps hit.

Soft shadows never used to give me a performance hit.

Just tried stalker, maxed out at.

I loaded outside of the start thing, the fps was 6 untill I moves the mouse and went up to 27.

I was at 1280x1024, all max in game, dynamic lights, all the stuff.

Was around 27-45fps, 27 just outside the bunker, then going to the fire and the man who gives you a gun its 45fps there.

When the game was first released everyone got it, unless they eventually fixed it with a patch or something. I lost interest in it long before then. :o

Try the benchmark again, this time use 0AA and then 2xAA or 4xAA

Keep CCC AF on tho.

OK here ya go, 16xAF set in CCC and the AA set in game with texture filtering set to bilinear.

NO AA

2XAA

Thats some fps drop just for a measly 2xfsaa.

Makes sense the crappy Soft Shadows take up a massive amount of shader power for little affect. Leaving hardly any room for AA.

RavenUK, can you do the stalker benchmark in XP with fraps, starting from the start just outside that basement were you talk to the funny eyes guy, then walk up to the fire and the man who gives you a gun, walk into the basement thing near him, then back to the one were you start the game?

And can you try F.E.A.R at 1280x1024?

If you dont have stalker, can someone else try?

Sorry Will, i don't have stalker but I'm sure someone else will. This is my last fear bench this time with 16x AA in CCC and 2 x AA in game and soft shadows disabled. Soft shadows look crap and kill FPS dramaticly.

ATi are still optimising it on these cards as they were not given the BETA of the game so they were late to the table for optimising

Getting a performance increase myself in Lord of the Rings Online, same settings as before (ultra high in everything where possible, 16x AF, 2x AA) but now I can have 4x AA.

From looking about the web soft shadows seems to kill performace on almost any card, I can see multiple reviews which show the GTX suffering just as bad as the 2900 :o

There is a downloadable benchmark to put into stalker, I have posted my results in the hd2900 benchmarks thread.

One of the most highly anticipated titles of 2005 was Monolith's paranormal thriller F.E.A.R. Taking a look at the game's minimum system requirements, we see that you will need at least a 1.7GHz Pentium 4 with 512MB of system memory and a 64MB graphics card in the Radeon 9000 or GeForce4 Ti-classes or better, to adequately run the game. Using the full retail release of the game patched to v1.07, we put the graphics cards in this article through their paces to see how they fared with a popular title. Here, all graphics settings within the game were set to their maximum values, but with soft shadows disabled (Soft shadows and anti-aliasing do not work together currently). Benchmark runs were then completed at resolutions of 1,280x960 and 1,600x1,200, with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering enabled.
