Change to MM access after 1st January 2024

You understand that a forum only survives with contribution right? If everyone decided to "lurk" or assumed their supposed veteran status that the forum would wither and die, taking along the MM. Therefore it's only fair that those who contribute get access.

You understand that that this rule doesn't stop those who post 1000 times then stop posting. They just do the same thing with the new rule.

What they should have done is stop people who only post in MM.

The point of the forum and thus MM is to support the shop. Why not only allow access to the forum, or MM to recent customers.

I assume it's not impossible that lurkers also buy from the shop. Or their contributions to the forum, however small, encourage others to do the same.

Didn't realise he's a mod. I stand corrected.

Thanks for clarifying what my inadequate eyes somehow missed. Fully understand why you'd want to automate something, I'm well aware how easily time can be consumed faffing with things like this.
The automation should have just blocked those with only posts in MM in the X period. That would make more sense.

Not that it effects to me anyway. Unless they do the same thing with the main forum.

If they reach 1000 posts and stop posting, they won't continue to get access to the MM.

This rule is what is in place to stop people only posting in MM after they've reached the minimum post count (whether they reached it yesterday or in 2005).

Also, this forum is not a democracy, accepting membership is accepting rules even if they do not make sense to you and are made by a small quorum of members.

From experience this forum is one of the best I've ever used for moderation.

However the majority of other forums I've used have decimated their membership with a raft of new rules. Most of them pointless. Guess that's a balancing act. Chaff from the wheat etc.

This rule has swept up people who never or rarely use MM.

It's going to encourage spam, ultimately. That kinda of posting will eventually drive people away.

Swept them up how? If they never use MM then losing access to it is meaningless and literally absolutely nothing changes for them?

(Well, I suppose being pedantic, something does change, their visible list of forums that they never use will be slightly shorter :p)

The mods already were stopping people who only post in MM. Except now, there are fewer of those and the mods have an easier job picking up the "spam 15 posts every 90 days" people. Because the automation has made them stand out even more than just posting in MM.

Disagree.

Yes that would be sensible - wonder if it's possible, maybe a future improvement thanks to the magic of automation!

Swept them up in what? If they never posted in the MM surely nothing will change for those people - post as little or as often as you like if you never access the MM.

I can't grasp why you're not getting this!

If someone posts 1000 times and then stops, they'll get 90 days access to MM and then access is revoked - that's a lot of effort to go to for 90 days access.

This does stop people who only post in the MM?? - it's not a revoking of all posting privileges. Is that where your confusion is coming from? New customers have full access to the main forums (I think it's only crypto that has access requirements).

Except spam will be dealt with as it always has been. People who tried to spam their way to the initial 1000 posts for MM access were caught and had posts removed/post count reduced, why do you think this will be any different?

Sounds like its created as much work as it saved.

Whilst I now understand why the change has been implemented I disagree with you with regards to spam posts being more easily identified. As I've already highlighted myself there are numerous non value added threads which I'd class any post added to as spam, one example being 'The random image thread'. These threads make it easy to up post count if you've nothing to actually say. I don't see how all, what could be considered, spam being identified. New users to the forums would not be so aware of such threads initially however and their spamming would be more easily identified by the mod team.
