Hi all,

Looking for a cheap decent 4x4 for the winter months. Reason being is that the other half has to travel a lot of country roads to get to work and they have been really bad in the last couple of days.

Something we can buy now and sell on in the spring, or store it away.

Cheap as possible really. :D

cant help but thinking that a cheap as possible 4x4 would be a pile of junk and that youd probably be better just getting another set of wheels with winter tyres for your existing car.

Problem is that she soemtimes uses her car and others her mums depending on whether I've got the car or not.

I've been looking at the series II/III landrovers on autotrader.

a lot of "4x4" wont cope any better than normal cars on the roads. If you really are in a pickle and have problems going down these road then:

Land Rover Defender. You can get an old one that wont be comfortable but it will work and will hold its value very well until you sell it again.

Edit* Just seen your post. Series Land Rovers would also be spot on :)

So you want to buy a 4x4 for the 6 days a year our roads become tricky?

Doesn't sound particularly "cheap" to me.

Someone here is selling their brand new audi tt becasue it wouldent get up the hill that her old mk1 quattro would (in the snow ) :p

I'll have a look at the defender.

I am aware that it won't greatly help handling etc but if an old 4x4 has an accident it a) won't matter and b) will offer better protection that her golf or her mums corsa. Plus, as its country roads if she needs to mount the grass side she can :)

Why would you buy a Defender? They are unreliable and expensive. Enthusiasts only.

You can barely give Jeep (Grand) Cherokees away in the current market. Very cheap with a lot of luxury.

That said we get about 3 days a year on average like this with icy roads unless you live up in the mountains etc.

Defender is hardly a pile of old junk Clarkey. I'd say an old Jap car fitted that description better. Like them or love them.. Defenders are an outstanding vehicle.

I'm no expert on how 4x4s handle hitting things like cars/people/trees but surely an old 4x4 will be worse than... well, how old is the Golf? I'm thinking feet chopping off crunchy bits.

The golf is 2003.

The main issue is that the road is a death trap when its wet/cold because it easily floods and although she drives slow there is still the chance of the car getting damaged. We really don't care if a £500-£800 banger gets banged up.

Plus, i would probably use it to take our dogs out etc at the weekends.

EDIT: Nice call on the Jeeps, always liked them and they look a lot better :D

The large 4x4's at the cheap end of the market tend to be very expensive to run, unreliable etc..

Is it worth looking at a the Audi A4 / A6 Avant Quattro??

I don't know much about cars but a Suzuki SJ series jeep is pretty capable offroad from what I know and they're very cheap. An Isuzu Trooper is another decent alternative, much bigger internally but with correspondingly bigger engines so not necessarily cheap to run although the initial outlay isn't huge.

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and its a great vehicle.

This was soon after I bought it. Its since had diesel rear springs fitted as these are much stronger and gives a little 1" lift :)

They are hardly crap IMO. They do exactly what it says on the tin.

Mines half the price of that and Grands look geh.

Anyone remember the baddies in The Goonies?

An old Nissan Terrano would fit the bill for you, preferably a SWB model. You want something small and maneouverable on snow and ice. However, unless you fit proper winter tyres to whatever you buy a 4x4 may not be as useful as you might think on snow and ice.
