Cheap 4x4

Just because it's a 4x4 does not mean it'll instantly be able to cope with snow and ice.

My family have a LandRover 110 Defender, and a few times even at low speed (ie sub 10mph) on an icey road it went sideways.

You'll need winter tyres still, or chains etc. to give all four wheels the chance to grip.

About the only benefits you'll gain from the Golf is a higher driving position so can see more of what is up ahead, and the ability to pull onto a verge without getting stuck (although that depends on how soft the verge is).

Bumping into things will be much worse than in the Golf, the car will take more of a beating and you will feel it a lot more than in the Golf.

You may as well just get chains for the Golf and the Corsa.

Yes in all seriousness buy her another set of wheels and fit some special winter tyres if you really want her to be safer. Jeeps and 4x4s will still slide on icy roads.

Its illegal to have summer tyres on your car in car in the winter in a lot of EU countries.

Am I the only person who is concerned people will buy cars so they can be not bothered if they crash? Seems a bit of a cavalier attitude

It does disturb me actually, and I'm one to buy older cars that can kill me easier.

Its not like I am going to be ripping around the countryside in it driving like a fool.

Its purely because IF it does get damaged either from an accident or from having to go into a verge it won't matter :D

and which is more likely to have an accident, an old 4x4 (not exactly renowned for their on road stability at the best of times) or a modern car with suitable tyres and ESP?
Also why wouldn't it matter if you have a crash in an old car, sure as heck will if you break your legs.

Quite, imagine owning a car registered in the last century

It wasn't the age so much as the change from a 2003 car to cart sprung twin live axle driving, with a slightly higher COG and if you buy one of the later updated models you even get servo assisted braking!

Just so everyone is aware, the roads we are talking about are the sort you don't drive at more than 15mph in great weather. You are talking around 5mph max in bad weather so any accident isn't going to cause a lot of damage. I'd just rather it happen in an old banger than a more expensive car to repair. We are not talking about leg breaking speed etc.

Its an interesting question though (even though it is a daft idea to buy one specifically for the purpose)- what is the best banger for the snow?

Everyone seems to be going down the offroader route but wouldn't a much smaller car with skinny tyres and 4WD be a better option? Something like this wonderful example? http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...BARU&model=JUSTY&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=
This would be better... :D

Wait.. you are buying a car based on the likelyhood of you crashing it at 5mph?

So, tiny roads then?

Is a massive great 4x4 behemoth a sensible choice at all for such small roads?
