As has been said already invest in winter wheels and tyres and send her for some decent driving tuition, it'll be a hell of a lot more beneficial and last her the rest of her life. Putting your other half in a cheap FWD that she has no experience in driving for a few days a year isn't going to magically make her or anyone else safer, quite the opposite. She's not going to suddenly know what to do in the event of a slide just because she has FWD but now instead of a Golf with a low centre of mavity she has a 2 tonne 4x4 with a high centre of mavity, she over corrects, meets a ditch sideways and it goes over, hardly a safe outcome.
