Chess club

This sounds really good. Looks very sociable and brilliant fun. It's exactly the kind of gaming that I like.

I just really suck at chess.

Doesn't matter. It's still fun to play and if you play on chess.com there's an option to play a 'balanced game' where the player with a higher rating has pieces removed from the board. It works quite well to allow players with different levels of experience play each other and keeps it interesting.

@melmac send me match invite if you want Scharf_Chess.
Thank you, I might work up the courage to do that!! :) When I say I am really bad, I mean really bad. Like I don't know proper openings or defending against them etc. etc. My biggest problem with Chess is the same problem I have in other games. I am hoarder and count it as a failure every time one of my pieces gets taken :p

You’re over thinking it. From all the guess the elo episodes I’ve seen. I don’t think anyone below 1200 actually knows any openings past move 2. I don’t really know any openings.

Only from about 1600+ do people seem to play them properly (for about 5 moves :D ).

Don’t worry the more you player the better you get at sacrificing your men for the greater good :p

I'm going to bite...

Why shouldn't we play stockfish?

Stockfish is a chess engine. I think places like Chess.com or Lichess are designed to detect its use, but playing someone outside of these you are just left praying the other guy isn't using it. Or using lana beads like Hans Niemann was definitely wasn't against Magnus Carslen.

From what I've seen on Gotham's channel cheaters generally stick to rapid (it seems like it is normally 10 mins), as it gives them enough time to copy the moves into the engine calculate the best moves and then play it. The dumber ones usually end up rocketing up the leagues so they end up around 2000 ELO before being banned. I believe you get your ELO back as well if they are banned.

the smarter ones probably use the engine for a handful of moves to avoid being detected, but it does mean that you could probably still beat them if they end up in a bad situation when not using the computer.

By the way, are you guys aware of the offline chess GUI Arena? Literally google "Arena chess gui". It is a *free* gui for multiple popular chess engines so you can practice against them. Can be configured to match your approximate rating so as not to get instantaneously thrashed, Stockfish being one of the most popular and strong. Can also download fancy looking chess sets and boards etc to make it look nice. Although I don't really play that much chess myself, I do like to watch the "Chess with Suren" and Agadmator chess youtube channels, Suren in particular, "Hello chess lovers"

No, but sounds interesting, I'll give it look.

Let’s see if this works. Just played a game where I was on the ropes and managed to pull off a win with some great teamwork between my knight and my queen.

I'm black

Nice moves and come back. That pawn way into your opponents side also really helped.
