Children not allowed squash in school !

Forcing a child when they have a choice as he is 10 years old is abuse and that is how I parent , I agree on the brushing of the teeth 100% as that is for there benefit of personal care but I wouldn't force the 10 year old to do it as I have sat down with him and explained that that is there for personal health and he brushes his teeth atleast twice a day .
Forcing a child to drink something via withholding everything else to the point of dehydration is therefore force when they should have a choice . I wouldn't do this to an adult so I wouldn't do it to my child .

And if your child was equally picky with food?

None of them are that fussy so I am fortunate ,

But if they only ate mash potato I would still encourage them to try boiled potatoes but continue giving them mashed potato as it is a way of them eating potatoes .

Same principle as with the water really if you think about it as there still getting the basic with just a little flavour added ;)

I was meaning more about them avoiding a large variety of foods, rather than a single preparation of a single foodstuff. :p

Just warning you, your child might end up similar to my gf, who would sooner go without anything if only water is available.

No wonder we have had a four-fold increase in the number of children and teenagers admitted to hospital for obesity-related conditions in the last decade judging by some of the ridiculous comments here.
Poor little 'Johnny' doesn't like water:rolleyes: I bet little 'Johnny' doesn't like fresh fruit and vegetables either?

Of course children are going to choose unhealthy sugar and salt loaded drinks and food compared to healthy natural choices but our responsibility's as adults is to provide them with healthy food that is good for their bodies.
And if that means poor little 'Johnny' might have to storm off to his room in a strop and miss a few dinners for not getting his own way then so be it!

The food you introduce children too when young is vitally important in influencing the type of diet they are likely to continue with in adult life, get it wrong and you will significantly reduced life expectancy and their quality of life due to the increased probability of medical and health problems!!

Why SHOULD they have a choice? It's nice if they do, but choice is not always available or preferable. They're kids, not adults - by definition they need adult supervision, and sometimes that means not having a choice.

Remember, it's just water. There can be no harm to him. At worst it is evens, at best very beneficial.

Your view of what is and isn't abuse is pretty different from most people's. it's also different from the schools' as well. Remember it's the school not giving the choice, not you.

Thanks for the concern but I am lucky enough to have children that would rather pick having a subway over a McDonalds .

People just not understanding that he doesn't like water but if that is all that is there and we have been out in the sun for hours he would drink the water to hydrate himself but I will not have this choice forced upon my child .

All the people saying but when he gets older he has to do what people put in rules then you will have children that work in Mcdonalds saying "would you like fries with that" as that's what they have been told ! Rather than a child that/young man that offers solutions and challenges things .

But in the real world situation I would not force him to drink something he doesn't like as that is just not fair when he is given a choice . This is what I am trying to find out if they have taken away his choice unfairly as I believe every child/person should have a choice in every situation without having something forced upon them .

I believe they have taken away his choice unfairly so it may be worth telling the school that and they may be able to make a compromise e.g letting the children bring in flavoured water and then they would have a choice if they dont like normal tap water they can have flavoured . :)

Johnny A.K.A Brandon loves all fruit and veg (except toms) and he is only picking diluted squash over plain water not a friggin can of sugar

He is a person so deserves a choice , this form of parenting and all that everyone can come up with is OH NO HE DOESNT LIKE WATER he will be a little **** when he is older !!!! I know for a fact a child without choices works out less well off as I was raised my my military father where I had no choice and no say , except yes sir/no sir .
People that have met Brandon say he is the most polite and caring child they have met and this is his choice as he says it is better to be nice to people as they will be nice back to you in return

I do like that the multiple comments about filtered/mineral/spring water have been ignored by the 'tap water tastes horrible' brigade!

Have you spoken to the school yet about finding a resolution to this?

People rarely ask for advice do they normally substantiation for their actions or the actions they are going to take irrespective of everything else.

Just FYI (you may not be aware). Subway is also extremely unhealthy. They are both fast food restaurants. There's no problem with this of course (I love a good Subway) but it's like giving the choice between sweets or doughnuts.

Any suggestions on how to get around this or if there are any laws etc that say they are allowed to do this or not

Havent seen many suggestions really except a couple .

How am I annoyed as it is not anyone here taking away his choice at school , but telling me to take away his choice outside his school so he will be compliant to there unreasonable rules

Bread , tuna/ham or turkey , pepper , cuecumber and sweetcorn . 1 bag of crisps capri sun or bottled water (the girls like it) .

Easy answer here, if you do not like the school rules - go to another one? Its fairly easy to do from what I gather.

Why do you think their rules are unreasonable - they may be based on a perfectly sound logic?

The bread is the main issue from what I remember. I'm sure they use a lot of salt and oils in its preparation.

They may seem unreasonable to you, a 5% squash person, but certainly some parents will rock 50% squash, and they can't really control exactly how much squash is present, so a blanket ban is the only option.

Also, squashes can vary massively, so you might be using 5% of a Robinsons fruit based squash, but the people rocking 50% could be using tartrazine fueled sugar-juice. ;)

I think its unreasonable because they have no choice , Just 1 drink and nothing else .

I see no logic here so this is what I am trying to gather before I go in empty handed .

Beef, bread, lettuce, potato. That's essentially what a Mcdonalds is but it's still crazy unhealthy.

I'm not saying there's any problem with kids having fast food as a treat or whatever but Subway is unhealthy and that's a fact I'm afraid.

My daughter's school does this. As it happens I agree with it. Water is healthy and it means they don't have to try and differentiate from normal, properly diluted 'squash' drinks and sugar / sweetener filled pseudo-juice drinks.

Of course it makes it easier for me as my daughter chooses water over every other drink whether in school or not. I can't imagine it's fun trying to tell a youngster that he has to change his routine and drink something that he prefers not to drink. Having said that, in my experience he will get used to it quickly and don't under-estimate the power of peer pressure. If all the others are drinking water I think you'll find he'll drink it quite readily when he's thirsty.
