"Losing face" is such a huge issue there is always the worry that those involved will feel forced into doing something dramatic to regain their honour or that others behind the scenes will make a move if they feel that that Winnie the Poo is no longer bringing the results they want because, in the end, saving the "face" of China over the long term is far more important overall than saving the "face" of an individual leader in the short term.

IMHO China really should wait a year for the economic reality of COVID-19 to hit the Western world hard before considering any attempts at expansion/intimidation as smaller nations like Australia are still too "strong" to be pushed around diplomatically right now. China's biggest concern really would be another 4 years of Trump, vs someone more malleable to Chinese requests i.e whoever gets the Democrat nomination, as China loved the GDP growth they gained during the Obama era (it tripled) despite an occasional bump in the road politically with Obama. It also used that 8 year period to bolster itself as a "world power", using that tripling of GDP to buy lots of other nations debt in a lot of "real poltik" quid pro quo.

It's starting to look like China is learning handing out money/debt to small nations may not buy you the power you seek as now some smaller nations give China and their debt a big fat middle finger and ejecting their diplomats

Xi has promised his party and his citizens that China would be the only super power in the world and crush anyone who dares voice displeasure with force by 2050 and also make Chinese citizens the richest in the world.

They have a long way to go and are now starting to go backwards

@ianh as an Aussie I dont forsee any future diplomatic weakness in the matter. The argument is genetic - we are still driven by the root fiercest intellectual and fighting genes on the planet, heritage, natures gift to those who had to overcome the wildest nature. Far from Africa springs to mind.

If we were drive purely by genetics, then we'd have never left the cave. To reduce everything to base instinct is to take a **** on the graves of the billions of people our society was built by, we should just skip to the end and nuke ourselves now if that's the case.

Meanwhile with a second shooting down of an object over Alaska;

Now the US have launched an ICBM in to the pacific ocean as a show of force against China

U.S. Test Launches ICBM Into Pacific as Part of Nuclear ‘Deterrence Mission’

Military officials said the test launch of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile serves as a reminder that the U.S. can ‘deter twenty-first century threats.’

Cute, China thinks it can play with the US.
Well the lines are becoming clear now, West thought they could change the east via economics. This is not happening at all.

As I said Russia has been sharing its tech with the axis of evil.
West has been terribly slow, however, I do think they are waking up now. investment in new weapons will continue to grow, “arms race 4.0”.

The next 7 years we are going to see some technological advancements in weapon’s that will spillover to the wests economy, bipolar lockdown in the horizon.

here we go again
North Korea held mass rallies in Pyongyang where people shouted slogans vowing a "war of revenge" to destroy the United States, as it marked the 73rd anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, state media reported on Monday.

Do the people believe it, though? Or is it just more internal government organised propaganda to control the people? I don't know.

I don't really know about the situation between China and the US. Invariably, the most powerful countries do what the heck they want to do, and China will be no different. The rest of the problem is all to do with the handing over of the crown. When the previously "most powerful" country is displaced, there has always been a war with the new crown holder.
