Mr Gardiner’s vociferous lobbying on behalf of his Chinese paymasters is well known. Indeed, The Times reported five years ago that he had received payments totalling £180,000 from a firm linked to the Chinese state and employed the son of its founder in his Westminster office. At the time, Mr Gardiner was calling for more Chinese investment in Britain and was denouncing proposals to put the Hinkley Point nuclear project on ice because of security concerns over Chinese involvement. In the light of other lobbying by MPs with a financial interest in the outcome, as was the case recently with Owen Paterson, it is extraordinary that this was tolerated. Such links are not only an affront to political ethics, but an underhand way for MPs to enrich themselves at the expense of private firms or foreign governments, with the quid pro quo largely hidden from voters.

Liked the irony that Canadian athletes being given burner phones for olympics , and the medals have been smelted from paterial revovered from 80K tonnes of mobile phone waste -
they could just award new phones as a prize instead.

Its IDS what do you expect. He also tried to imply that it was obvious that Gardenier was paid off by china because he supported china building the power station that Cameron and Osbourne brought back. While Gardenier says he opposed it. I could check but it seems funnier not to bother.
 
I don't think we know yet what triggered the public outing, Gardiner doth protest too much - like it was a honey trap,
maybe it was seen to support Olympics 'sanctions'
 
Someone has at least updated his Wikipedia page now. According to this, Christine Lee's son, Daniel Wilkes is no longer employed in Labour MP Barry Gardiner's constituency office since the MI5 announcement. Presumably if he was doing an invaluable job he got on merit the job will be openly advertised for others to now apply. If not then surely the funds being used to pay him were being wasted too.

There is probably lots of this stuff going on by all kinds of countries and regimes.

When is the last time any member of the public saw an MI5 warning message? I've never seen one before.
 
Plenty of other countries we allow infiltrating our institutions though without even a hint of consternation from officials whose pockets are suspiciously bulbous. China is just the big bad (a deserved moniker) that our master (the US) no longer wishes to pretend can be made into a liberal democracy anymore.

There is surely no way there is only one of these lobbyists gallivanting about, so why only acknowledge her and not the rest?

Just possibly because in the eyes of many across the globe China is not flavour of the month, perhaps it's something to do with people's perceived origin of a virus that's killed millions? Perhaps some people in British intelligence are still highly suspicious of those from a communist regime handing out political donations in a capitalist country?

There are also a number of religions doing exactly the same thing.

It's just less PC to call out over representation of certain religions in goverment than it is the Chinese because it appears we don't really care about offending the Chinese I the same we we do other groups.
 
I seem to remember our current foreign minister getting the sack from a previous position over her undeclared visits to a foreign government without our government's approval or knowledge.

I suppose the Chinese make a change from the Russians who seem to love Boris and co.
 
Chinas infiltration of the west is hardly a secret it's been news for a few years now.

seems people turn a blind eye for personal enrichment.
 
Sorry, Parliament. Just becuase the USA decides another country is their enemy, it doesn't make that country Britain's enemy like Russia/China/Iraq/Iran/Syria/North Korea/Libya.. So of you think that I'm going to be very suspiicious and paranoid about the owners of Chinese take aways being spies you can think again.

Barry Gardiner Labour, who received over £420,000 and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey also received a £5,000 donation they was happy to take the money donations without questions for five years? They should be sacked.

Yvette Cooper said: "We condemn in the strongest terms the attempts by China to interfere in Britain's democratic processes." So what has EU been doing for 42 years!

There is something wrong with our democracy, you don't read in the news about the communist party attacking a country just for oil do you like the US did!

So how did China managed control of its pandemic in 3 mouths that we still can't do in two years!

Was an interesting documentary about China's shenanigans in Australia and Pacific regions, how they have massive stakes in universities there and had influenced politicians etc etc to further their cause, was pretty scary especially the one where students protesting China's wrong doings were ganged up on and beaten up by Chinese students in uni grounds and the university did nothing as it received Chinese money and didn't want to upset them.

They are definitely playing the long game.
