Chromecast

I download stuff from android police rather than any link.

On my nexus 4 and 7 2013 you can pull down the shortcut menu and tab cast screen from there without needing the Chromecast app.

Can anyone briefly explain Chromecast to me?

I currently use my android tablet to "beam" shows, youtube, etc to my pansonic viera tv, does this do the same thing? is there much point me getting it?

The Chromecast is a dongle that plugs into the HDMI port. You then open apps that support it and it will search your wifi network for Chromecasts. I'll use YouTube as an example. You then press the Chromecast icon that pops up and connect it to the Chromecast. Choose the video you want to play and it will play. You can then power off your phone/tablet and the stream continues as the Chromecast connects to YouTube rather than your phone/tablet sending the video to the Chromecast.

tl;dr it's no different to how your TV remote works now.

BTW you can still grab one for £18.99. Infact there is a good How Does It Work video on that page!

As you are already able to beam it to the TV you don't need a Chromecast unless you want to be able to continue to use your tablet for other things whilst it is "casting" (assuming the beaming function doesn't let you do that now).

You can check if it is available in the Settings/Display menu but it is not listed as being supported.

That's great, now all i need them to do is allow cast from Chrome browser on Android and Apple and I won't even need to switch my PC on again!

Yessss, seems they did this for Chrome on Android at least, so it works that I can browse to the webpage, cast the stream to the TV and then continue using N7 for other things... bye bye laptop :D Wife is jealous that her iPad can't do it :p

Used Chromecast out of the box?

Just bought a Chromecast and seems to have somebody else's router details embedded, instead of a setup screen, it's saying reconnect me, 'Living room can't find the aolwirles network' but don't what it should say.

Does this look like it's been used before?

I didn't name it Living room, and my wireless network insn't called aolwirles

I have a chromecast.

That one you have has been used before.

Its pretty easy to setup -reconfigure using the chromecast app on your device, but if you were expecting a brand new un-opened one, you didn't get one.

Looks to be used yes. You can factory reset by holding the button on it for 20 or so seconds or take it back to where it came from. There are seals on the box to show if it's new.

Can you miracast to these from an iOS device? Don't want to fork out for Apple TV just for the AirPlay aka miracast feature
The chromecast does not support miracast at all.

You can "cast" a tab from an appropriate device using an appropriate browser.
Currently this does not work on chrome for iOS.
I believe it does work on Android, although the results can be less than useless in some cases with crappy picture quality and choppy audio.

This ^^ has also been my experience when "casting" from a browser on my desktop PC. It works as a last resort, but doesn't offer a pleasant viewing experience. For example , using the Youtube app on the chromecast is much better than casting a youtube tab from my PC (with the added benefit I dont need my PC or even my iPad switched on).

At the checkout they opened it to remove the security device from inside, I didn't notice whether the seal was already broken.

Thanks, that was what I thought.

Taking mine back. It keeps displaying a black screen after loading. It worked for a day. I've tried plugging it into the mains, unplugging the TV, resetting the dongle, etc.

It was a bit slow too to be honest. Great for Netflix but I can use my PS3 for that - it just isn't as high quality. Might pick up an alternative instead but the main reason I was going to use it is for Popcorn Time. Shame that takes a good 2 minutes to load a show compared to seconds on my computer.
