From what I can gather these were Sunni Muslims complaining about the portrayal of a film directed by a Shia Muslim.

I think considering Shia Muslims are a small minority of the overall Islamic community in Britain it would have been wiser for Sunni's to just boycott seeing the film.

He's a Shia Muslim, and judging from the rhetoric the Sunni Muslims protesting don't consider them proper Muslims.

Basically they have a lot of disagreements - kind of like protestants and Catholics, but turned up to 11. Internationally for example Iranian government is Shia, but Saudi is Sunni.
