Bradford was chosen last week as the UK’s City of Culture for 2025. This week, Bradford Cineworld – as well as a number of other cinemas around the country – announced that a new movie called The Lady of Heaven was being pulled from schedules following protests by angry Muslims. So is this what we can expect from a City of Culture in 21st-century Britain – the creation of all kinds of culture, except for anything that might offend some adherents to the Islamic faith?
This is chilling. Call me an old-fashioned secular democrat, but isn’t it completely wrong, and morally perverse, to allow small numbers of religious hotheads to determine what the rest of us can see and watch? This grants a veto to fundamentalists, allowing them to shape public culture to their own tastes and prejudices. It is profoundly illiberal.
I mean, isn't that partly what a picket is designed to do? Where do you draw theThere us nothing wrong with peaceful protest. Being there to show your dissatisfaction. There is nothing right about intimidation of people going about their legal activities, leisure or work.
Even pickets are supposed not to intimidate except by peaceable persuasion of the verbal variety. Unfortunately not too many are skilled in the arts of debate and non verbal scuffles do occur.I mean, isn't that partly what a picket is designed to do? Where do you draw thepicketline?
Top gun Maverick is an awesome filmWhat a joke.
Imagine actually being so indoctrinated from birth that your entire waking day was ruled by talking multiple times a day to something that is invisible and doesn't actually exist.
Then being offended on the behalf of a dead person that possibly lived 1500 years ago...
So offended that you would kill/die to defend made up rules that are now hundreds of years out of date and utterly irrelevant.
I laugh at religions
Reminds me of some people in this thread.I mean imagine not being indoctrinated since birth and defending their right to enforce their own beliefs on others, that's literally 10x worse
Religion serves no purpose in civilized society, something that has continued from a long past time when people wanted an explanation for how things work/why things are a certain way (ofc the magic sky fairy did it) and didn't have the tools of knowledge to know any better. Along with the whole controlling the masses stuff/war etc
I'm going to tell my wife her sister's a muslim, so I can take her photos down at home.
Perhaps they're just angry because their wives can't get into see a 15 rated movie.
James Randi is great, he has a nice way of putting things. Indoctrination is a powerful thing tho. I do tend to doubt the intelligence of any adults who still believe in any religion (like Santa clause) among the many things kids grow out of after they develop reasoning skills.Yup, pretty much what James Randi says in this video, its easy to explain things with some "all powerful authority" in charge.

I’ve no idea how to post that as a Twitter link, but that guys actions are perfectly reasonable hey?
As I said, a protest can appear intimidating if you’re on the receiving end. There is nothing to suggest that the protesters threatened people, the reports say they were shouting. That happens during a protest.
As I said, as much as the tories are in the works of banning it, there is still a right to protest in this county. I’d have thought that would be a welcome thing amongst the ‘my grandfather didn’t fight the Germans for us to not have a voice’ brigade. You’d think the right to protest would be applauded.
