Cities: Skylines

Hah, loaded up my city for the first time since the parklife update, assumed my city would be completely broken.

I had taken a break to play Battletech.

Pleasantly surprised to see it appears, at least, that my city is completely intact.

Let the screenshot spamming commence!!!!!!!! muahahhahahahhahahahah

Total brain-fade yesterday.
Went back to my city to finish off the power-station area, which I'd filled with a dozen geothermal plants.

Couldn't find it anywhere on the map- didn't even have an inkling as to where I'd built it. Just started to cuss, assuming the save must've messed up, then remembered I'd been playing Tropico 5...

I played T4 to death. T5 seems a lot more... umm... different (?) and took a bit of getting used to.
Love them both, but just got more into 5 recently.
Think 6 is due out this summer- if it's as good as I've heard then I'll be buying that!

781 hours for me.
Surprised at how much fun it still is.

Yeah I read that Tropico 6 is supposed to be out sometime this year. It might be tempting to buy that.

A Tropico game with full workshop support would be amazing unlikely tho.

That's the joys of modding.
Went through a phase of going as big as possible. Changed the population modifiers, so 3 times more residents per building. Buses that carry a thousand people, so on and so forth. Unlimited money, 25-tile maps, fill the lot on pause, zone it all up, jack the demand meters up, connect the roads and unpause... My aim was to reduce my 4770K to tears, and I managed it on several occasions.
Now, it's all about making it pretty, and getting those public transport systems running perfectly... that new map helps!

I suppose the workshop and the multitude of building styles adds to the longevity of this game.

Whilst I could not be a great detailer like some you can watch on YouTube the appearance of what I'm building is now much more important than the total population.

Probably why I never get to post in that thread about what Man jobs you have done today, I'm just stacking the hours in on this game !

I got a bit bored today so I thought I'd have a go at making an entire city around one terrible junction. Looks legit...

The only way is is via the junction. The only way out is via the junction*. None of the "spokes" of the junction are connected, except for that incinerator at the top right. Traffic is just beginning to break now! When I got bored (again) I'll probably replace it with a giant motorway roundabout.

* OK yeah the employment bit next to the motorway is connected, I thought it would help with "not enough workers" but no one is using it and I started building offices instead.

I've got a city going with 86% traffic flow, keeps jumping to 100% for some reason though when it's obviously not. When I plan my roads I'm trying to avoid lots of through roads and make sure I implement lots of cycle and paths. Traffic is dumb in this game even with mods, you put in the M1, you put in an outer ring road, it's obvious what to use, not some little housing estate roads to get from one end of the city to the other and that's exactly what they do.

How are you guys managing to make such big cities? Performance grounds to a halt around the 250K population mark for me with a 1070 and latest gen I7 (setting all as low as possible). I've given up now, which is a shame as I love the game up until it crawls.

Yea I don't have as good CPU as you do, plus I modded my game to hell, but my city started running very slow towards the end, it does ruin the experience a little, and fear that it is one of those games that no matter how good your hardware is, the game just at can't handle it past a certain point.

I note Strictoaster's last few projects on YouTube have been much smaller but more detailed projects, I think this is the way to go, going forward.

I haven't given up on this game completely though, but I got sidetracked with Battletech and now Warframe, which I am completely addicted to. It'll be a while before I get back in to this game.

When I come back, I'll start a new project and UK based definitely given the available assets. I do have a rough idea of what I will do at the back of my mind, but right now my precious "man time" will be spent playing Warframe.

I'm trying to find some custom paths, like quay walls but with paths on, seen a video and someone was placing walls like quays but they had paths on anyone know where to get them?

Then you'll need to use something like Moveit, to put the path on top of the quay.

Might need quay anarachy too? Never tried, but it's on my thoughts for my next city.

I've not acctually played in ages.

Games so finicky, one minute working fine. Next doesn't load, could spend ages removing assets/mods. Then I remove everything and then I have to go back finding stuff again.

So I've decided to scrap my city and all my saves and start again due to degrading performance, literally was running at 9fps. Deleting all mods and assets and will re download the below list, seem to get better performance, I think they're all essential mods really, will have to re download assets as well.

^^^^ Been distracted by No Man's Sky and other games so not bothered with this for a while.

That list is far from essential mods when you have game changing ones like Rush Hour. Automatic Bulldoze, from what others have noted, is quite a resource hog. More beautification comes up now and again for not being FPS friendly.

More beutification is good for sorting props and is needed for nice looking cities. Automatic bulldoze, yeah guess I dont need that one. But rush hour 2? For realistic parking. Any conflicting mods that carry out the same functions there?

More Beautification is simply amazing but it does cost CPU time.....

Take a look at this thread for some guidance on the impact of some mods....

I note some mods and the type of testing is not all inclusive.

But I knew that I had a PC spec which could accommodate Cities of around 500k before I noticed the day and night cycle taking too long.

It was that day and night cycle, timed at 1x or 3x speed, that became my biggest issue. Still at Cities around 750k it was playable but not what I liked in terms of responsiveness.

There is a poster over in the Steam forums, Mark, and I downloaded some of his Vanilla Cities and wow were they so responsive in how they played, around 650k in pop. I was amazed at the difference in how a Vanilla based city ran over my usual heavy modded type.

But once you have tasted cake who wants vanilla, give me eye candy every time :D

For realistic parking you are just looking at the TMPE mod and then enable the Parking AI. That will leave your roads heavily congested with parked cars, looks good tho with lots and lots of parking zones created. Not sure if that by having many parked vehicles will make a difference in performance for lower spec PC's but at least it makes the city looked inhabited. That was the problem with the Vanilla cities at 650k, there looked to be no one living there...!
