Cities: Skylines

Yeah, i have a tendency to do the same, even though i realise what im doing :D

Does anyone else feel like the rail terminal & harbour are often more hassle than they're worth?? :D Seems like you really need to have multiple options for them, and/or have them in a location where a backlog of traffic isnt going to cause issues.

If you place them in the middle of a busy district then you're just going to cause all the traffic to flock to 1 location. The best solution seems to be to have multiple locations, and have them reasonably close but off track, so you can path them so they stay out of the way.

Just had my game lock up on me, the game action seemed to freeze yet it wasnt the process frozen. Tried to save it, and exit, but it wouldnt go back to the menu and i had to shut it down :( It seems like it didnt save but fortunately the auto-save mod must have been only a few min old (i'd saved manually about 5-10min earlier) which is just as well.

I have separated my city but it was good links via car, bus and the underground. I get small pockets of abandoned buildings or not enough works, that business will close down and then come back. Its what I expect to happen as when you expand you will have more residents than jobs, then more jobs than residents, You will never really strike a perfect balance.

As for the train yards. I put a 1 way street in that allows traffic to build up going in and build up coming out with no issues. Again plan for it and all will be good

I have started a new city last night and am actually planning out where everything is going to go before hand. This has helped massively being able to actually envision where things are going to go and what way the expansions will take place. Bits of it look a mess as they are still settling down and will be redone when expanding. Will take a few pics of some bits tonight.

Specialised doesn't from what I've seen.

One thing I have just done which has completely messed things up is to plonk down loads of parks everywhere. It instantly killed all commercial demand and now that's gone no more commercial is being built and therefore the industry is closing down as there is no-one to sell goods to and now everyone is leaving the city. I've read a few threads and they are looking into it as it seems bugged. Leisure stuff seems to satisfy commercial demand.

Yeah that is a known issue that they have acknowledged.

There is a mod pack\asset pack that you can get that has recreated the parks with no tourists so you can still have commercial, Its something like Default Parks - No Tourists.

I'm wondering whether I'm getting too hung up on keeping industrial and residential separated. I might start a new city tonight and try and keep them closer together in the early stages to see how that progresses.

How does everyone zone commercial? I've tended to mix it in with residential - ie, I build big wide avenues with commercial zones along them, then build side roads coming off those with residential behind. Not sure how commercial is affected by being close to industrial though.

I tend to use my commercial as a buffer between my industrial and residential, That way Commercial can get deliveries from any industrial it needs while being easily accessed by residential and keeps the residential happy that they aren't next to pollution

Moron of the year award to DampCat, for accidentally putting a Water Pump instead of a Sewage Outlet into the heavily polluted water, thus murdering his entire city in 5 short minutes.

For some reason I'm not getting this game. I fail at it badly, I run out of cash and I'm on my 6th city and I have not managed to reach 4000 ppl. Any pointers?

There's a map (riverrun I think) that has two highway connections one on a small section of land and the other on a larger part, I started off on the smaller part and its helped me learn how to keep everything compact to start off with and then expand so far this is the best im doing and ive gone through about 6-7 builds now

Was so disappointed by Simcity that this looks to be the game everyone hoped SimCity would be.

Hows the performance for people when the city gets sprawling?

Prob gonna pick this up for the weekend

Hard Mode mod on the Workshop now that allegedly removes the teleporting workers from the game, thus making traffic 100 times worse, but more realistic.
Amazing what the modders are achieving in only the first week on sale. I can only think it will harm he sales of any future official DLC that Paradox might release.

I don't think dlc will be affected by modding. People will always buy official content, the modding is a massive advantage to a games success.

I'm going to buy this asap I think I've decided. I might also look into modding as I have an idea for a mod I haven't seen so far. Not sure how difficult it would be but essentially:

* Separate out the water + sewage pipes into two separate systems you have to build + maintain

* Add multiple pipe sizes - so you'll have small, medium, large versions of the different sewer/water pipes with associated upkeep costs

* For sewer pipes, you have to make sure the pipes you've installed are sufficiently large to handle the demand - you can't just lay a grid everywhere like you can now but would have to use smaller pipes feeding into larger ones. Yes it's sort of like adding another "traffic" mechanic to the game, but not quite, because it's all one-way.

* Water pipes would work in a similar way - you'd have to feed a larger water main into smaller ones to distribute the water. The mechanic to manage here though would be the idea of pressure - the other way around to the sewers. You can't just go from a massive water main into a single smaller one, or you'll get problems at the join between them.

I dunno, something like that. I really think the pipes are an area that could be a lot more enjoyable to have to micro-manage than they are in the game currently.
