Cities: Skylines

Surprised, this game work in my Surface Pro 4 i5 4gb ram, not brilliantly but is playable. Turned graphics down and low Res but still looks better than on my pc ,I haven't enabled any graphics mods so guess is the graphics mods are really messing the game up on my pc. I'm away from my pc till Thursday so I'm glad it works need my skylines fix!

Will this run well on my friend's laptop?
i5-430m
HD 5650 mobility radeon
6gb DDR3 ram
Default 500gb HDD.

Thinking of getting it as a gift, but not if turning the settings down looks worse than simcity 4 to make it playable.

Been playing this recently, i had put it off for ages due to it looking overwhelming but once you've got a lot of it up and running it seems to take care of itself. Enjoying it a lot, but only at 1000 population so far so some stuff can and will go wrong in the future :p

Play around with it a bit but I would definitely recommend checking out YouTube, a good one is Strictoaster's - Cedar Valley build, it's a bit overwhelming at first but it'll show you what the game can do.

Also with that one, he builds up his skills as he goes and increases mods and assets etc throughout so you can also improve with the videos as you go.

I'm am watching the Arrowhead Junction series now which is a collaboration between Strictoaster and two others, and is a little more advanced - but more relates to my south west American themed desert city.

You don't need to try and be like these guys of course necessarily, it's just worth seeing what you can potentially do if you so desire.

The YT person you mentioned is very talented indeed But I would refer to his style as a creative detailer of this game.
People like Biffa tend to be less into the detail but play the game with less emphasis on the beautification.
As I've mentioned previously some even use mods to disable some of the game mechanics or always have full demand, so they can build as they wish.
Nothing wrong with any of that but not that useful if you are watching them play thinking that is how the game mechanics work.

I'm getting close to some of the hard coded limits in my game, it is kinda slow as well New map and fresh start soon..

What are the hard coded limits? I read something about a limit on each prop? Is that true and something that can be modded? I have big plans but still very early in my build plan, and I am placing tons of assets and props everywhere, only at about 15k pop altough my city is kinda large for the population.

Few more teaser screenshots:

Ruined Castle, thought I might as well use those vanilla props, looks nice lit up at night - forgive some of the stuff in the background, I have tons to do yet.

Motorway stop area, tried to make it look crappy.

More inner city area, love fried chicken.

This is an asset from KingLeno - I still have some detail work to do around the front entrance, but I manged to make a lake/(pond?) out the front with fountains and lights - again, I am not making a direct copy of Vegas - but a Vegas themed map and these big casino/hotel assets look amazing.

Stadium - sorry I left the upscaling mod menu in the top left - as you can see, when you turn it up to 300% my PC doesnt like it too much!

Hmmm the others I am not worried about and are only tiny numbers currently, I seriously doubt I will get even close with my planned city, but user placed props, I am at 11k out of 65k already....

Seems there is a prop unlimiter - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=886603352 - but, states not compatible with "Move It!" mod which is in my top 5 of couldn't live without it mods. The postive thing is I guess at least it is possible, maybe someone will develop a more robust version in the future - but I think for now anyway I will give that mod a miss.

Mine....

with a 585k city.

you can see we build kinda differently :)

At least you have an idea now on what those limits are.

As my city grows I'm not sure if it will be the limits or the game itself running slow, beyond what hardware upgrades can resolve.

I need the Move It mod too much to have to remove it.

Not sure what did it or even when it happened as I havnt focused on my "inner" highways lately but went to do a new connection today and noticed they looked like residential roads... Needless to say 2 lane highways and even 3 lane dont work in my game now.. :(

Also can someone let me know what graphics mods you're using, I want to remove all mine and start from scratch as one of them must make the game looks rubbish.

I dont use that many graphics mods as such - infact those dont really do that much. To make your city look different it's mainly about use a terrain theme/colour correction.

So on my city I am using the Arrowhead Junction terrain theme + LUT - which vastly transforms how everything looks. This is a desert theme, but there are tons of temperate ones also.

After that, there are some graphics mods, look on the steam workshop to see what they all do, but your game changer will be your terrain theme/LUT combo.

And this is where in my opinion having a desert map pays in dividends.

So much empy space, yet....tree brush....done.

Also, anyone know what mod it is to place the roads without the street lights? Network extensions is it? Wouldn't have street lights like this out in the desert.

I think that you need Network Skins in regards to the street lights. I do not use it myself but I sometimes note others using it. I think that you have to remove the lights as you place the road.

Yes network skins thanks, I already had network extensions!

Yeah pretty handy tool, just upgrade the road to whatever, then upgrade it back to what you wanted without the lights, a bit of work, but I dont think American "highways" would have street lights on out of town.
