City Fibre

Finally had City Fibre turn up today, after ordering in early October.

And they said "sorry can't drill through wood" and left

No idea how they're planning to compete with BT when they can't manage a business properly (not that BT are much better, but they are better)

anyone know when the Vodafone £30 deal will be back?
No idea, but the prices literally change every week or so, so just keep checking.
If you want to order now, you could always go for a smaller package, then upgrade later when it's cheap again.

Usually they contract people to do the install, no?
It was Kelly Communications who did mine, they were decent, they wanted to do it how they were told, so it took a bit of persuading to get them to do it how I wanted.

Only took them a few weeks from ordering to get mine installed. Although they refused to install to my upstairs office as roof was in the way apparently. £30 a month for 900mb pretty good. Although my WiFi isn't up to the job currently.

Not sure who turned up but either way, they were terrible.

They even asked me to drill the hole myself lol

Don’t. Mine have messed me around too. Can’t get to a telephone pole with the van hoist due to a tree, so one guy climbed it, found that there was ‘no light.’

Second team came a few weeks later after it was supposedly now activated, but then refused to climb the pole.

Third appointment coming, expect them to do the same even though I told them to have on the notes ‘must have guys with the balls to climb the damn pole.’

Whereas i had 5 Luton sized vans and 6 men turn up to install mine. It was a real, 1 guy drilling the hole, 1 guy installing the box, 1 guy holding the fibre, 1 guy holding the ladder etc etc stuff going on. :D Mine was just hole in the house to a bedroom first floor up though so not terribly taxing.

Thing is, to have 6e speeds everywhere, ideally you should have a cabled or dedicated backhaul, and nodes in each room. That costs money.

I have a single UniFi AP in my house (~1600 sq ft) and I get 450 Mbps pretty much everywhere.
Bought the Deco xe75's in the end. No cabling at all, getting 700mb+ in my office upstairs. Very pleased indeed.

Same Wi-Fi system I went with too. Had them installed in a couple of days. Impressive uplift in performance over previous mesh
I'm absolutely chuffed to bits with them. They have exceeded my expectations big time. My old p9's were getting 100-150mb tops in my office. So to get 700mb is a huge upgrade.

Many Openreach based services aren’t synchronous. Upload is slower than download.
This is the CityFibre thread, I don't think that's Openreach, their max is 910Mbps.
He said he was getting 'Be Fibre' installed before, haven't heard of them before & don't believe they use CityFibre's network.

Yes you're right it's not a city fibre connection, just had nowhere to talk about it as it's new to me, sorry for the hijack ha. Yes the upload speeds aren't near the download which is what is advertised 1gig down 1gig up.
I will drop them an email to see if there is an issue. Only thing it maybe not totally sure, is I am wired in via a cat 5e Ethernet cable to my pc.

while that’s not ideal, the cable is well capable of supporting the speeds, as shown by your download speed.

Who is the ISP? Who provides the fibre?

Yes it's a rural broadband project, I believe that's upgraded our area. I am the first on my street, at least who's gone for it. Had two days worth of installers come out, and a few neighbours inquire what's going on etc.
https://fibreheroes.co.uk/ this is the website. I can only go for the selected firms on this list, so it's a bit of a stab in the dark. Can only use their router, which is OK, even though it looks like a PS5 ha.

Really happy so far, but will drop them an email about the upload. Sorry, I've messaged in here as it's not the same company
