City Fibre

A quick web note sent to the company, and they were claiming everything is fine. But i saw my connection dipped out twice for a short time. Since then, full speed up and down result. Yet again, sorry for the hijack ha

Ok, I have serious issues too. I thought it was my mesh WiFi setup initially, partly why I upgraded it to xe75's. Some of the time it's fantastic and 900mb, then it just drops to like 5mb. I've tested and it's not just the WiFi, it's at the main router.

No idea if it's a botched install or issues at city fibres end. Who do I need to call? Voda or city fibre? I'm beginning to wish I'd stayed with virgin :( I need stable internet to work. Nightmare.

Weird thing is, it's fantastic this morning. Getting the full 920mb everywhere.

Last night it was totally unusable.

Is it likely to be a ropey fibre connection? Or a flaky router? Really baffling.

City Fibre signs all over the area and lots of streets being dug up locally, then got the email yesterday letting me know they're coming to the area.

Still with Vodafone for another year but like the idea of having an upstream as fast as the down.

It's hard to say what it is. Can you do a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 when things are good and another when they're not. That might give some hints.

It's unlikely to be a physical problem with the fibre, I expect it's an issue upstream of your property.

Vodafone resell the City Fibre product, I'd be amazed if they wouldn't let you migrate to it whilst in your current contract.

You’ve tested wired directly into the router? Set up a ping and traceroute as mentioned. It’s not the first I’ve heard of Vodafone capacity issues but to be fair it’s been a while since I’ve seen anything mentioned.

I knew there was some crossover between the two - this might be worth checking into when it goes live, thanks.
I was with Vodafone when City Fibre came along and for whatever reason they were only offering 500/100 or something similar for £40+ whereas TalkTalk wanted to give me 950/100 for £36 (I actually got 940/940 for the same price but kept quiet?! :D ) They also gave me an Eeero router which is infinitely better than the Vodafone one i had.

But i do remember joining Vodafone specifically a few years ago purely because of the City Fibre tie up.

Did Vodafone ever resolve their routing issue that seemed to be plaguing a lot of people with high ping and packet loss last year? I've tried keeping up with the thread on the Vodafone forum but don't know whether it actually got resolved. There have been far fewer comments on their forum more recently, so that would suggest it has, but can't seem to see anything definitively. Appears that the only ISPs offering FTTP in my area are Vodafone, Plusnet and Sky. I'm locked into a Virgin contract until July so currently weighing up options.

I changed the network cable from the ont to the router yesterday morning and the internet has been rock solid ever since. So I'm hoping just a ropey cable, fingers crossed :)

Only another 6 more months to wait until they on this side of the town. Just cant wait to get rid of VM. can i ask, is it possible to get the Fibre point put into a bedroom. I have my Vm connection to an 8 Port switch. i would like the Fibre connection to come here and then i can connect it to the 8 Port switch
would that cost extra? or would the be willing to do that part of the install Setup.

Depends if the cityfibre guys are flexible. Mine were able to route it above and around my front door to get it into my office.

Those sound like Openreach connections. Cityfibre are usually symmetric speeds.

I'm in Edinburgh and being routed through Leeds at the moment despite their being a BNG in my city. However my ping is very low and stable (see here) so it's not an issue.

Glad to know @Disco_P thats want i want to do to, worse case I'm happy to pay. Once the Fibre is installed in the Street. Is it Vodafone, who are their preferred ISP supplier for a few months Before you can move to other ISP ? or can you get Zen, Giganet, talktalk straight away once your Area comes online.

Mine finally shown I can get a bunch of providers and I have went with Giganet due to be installed 6th March so will see how it goes :)

Newer installs ge the choice with ISPs as it appears the deal between Vodafone and Cityfibre has ended.

From the site it looks like they give you a eero pro 6e. I will give it a bash out of curiosity before using my own UDM SE and ap points.
yeah I'm with them, you do get an eero pro 6e as a router from them.

one day last week the speed was really poor and the latency was also all over the place, so must have been having problems and now I can only get 700meg - 800meg download and 900 upload for some reason, before that it was a rock solid 950meg both ways all the time.
I'm not sure why this has changed but it's definitely not getting near 950meg anymore. that being said it's still better than Vigin media I was on
