Civilization V

So in civ V will a mace man still be able to kill an Apache helicopter or have they fixed it?

Well, a spearman has a strength of 7, a swordsman a srength of 18, and a tank a strength of 50.

All units have 10 hit points.

While one spearman wont be able to kill a tank, 10 of them might :p

yeah i'll be on the demo, i've pre-ordered anyway (not from Steam) but it'll be good to scratch the itch before the game arrives. 5pm EDT is the unlock time - 9pm GMT, so by the time it downloads it'll probably be bed time - either that or I go to work very tired :D

So the game is still broken then?

Show me a spearman who can dent an attack helicopter in flight let alone bring it down.

How about if the helicopter was flying low and a bunch of spearmen threw their spears into the blades or sides of the helicopter and it caused significant damage that it forced the heli down?

Its a strategy game, its not realism.

Pawns can also kill Queens in chess.

To be fair, the only time spearman could possibly come up against Tanks is because you're playing on a low difficulty and the AI is terrible anyway.

*is not guilty of that in any way because i suck at Civ*

If that's the case then why have upgrading units at all why not just have chess style abstract pieces?

An Apache is designed to withstand 23mm AA Fire so a spear ain't going to do **** :p

Oh I would never underestimate lower weaponry. I'm sure an Apache is designed to withstand 23mm AA fire, but I'll also wager that something primitive like a big catapult rock fired into the rotors will do quite some damage. Its probably never been tried, but I reckon that 20 6ft long metal spears thrown into the rotors are likely to have quite some effect.

A rock fired from a catapult i'd agree with, that entering the rotor blades even if it passed through it without hitting the helicopter (which in itself would probably cause serious damage) would most likely shred the blades. But a spear? Aren't the spears really just wood with a metal tip? Either way there isn't enough momentum, they'd most likely just be batted aside harmlessly.

But anyway, yeah, gameplay not realism.

Depends...who said the spear was made of wood? You could have a metal spear, hell you could have a titanium spear.

You could... but it was the 20th century before they could properly purify Titanium and by that time a Spear is probably not the best of uses for it. The blades would certainly be able to resist wooden spears, most likely by just cutting straight through them, and a metal spear would just be knocked away as there isn't enough weight behind it. And besides, the blades are loosely supported which would absorb some of the impact. Obviously its not an exact science but you could always compare a spear to a bird :p

How are you going to throw them that high and that accurately at a fast moving target?

Who said the spearmen were pre-20th Century and who said that the game was restricted to the same timeline as earth in regards to the required time for purification of Titanium? :D I've built stuff in Civ games way before earths timeline for the same thing

(I guess in essence I am saying its a game, not a historically and scientifically accurate interactive documentary :p)
