Civilization V

Just finished my first 100 turns.

All very slick (sort of) and all very clinical. Left me feeling a bit cold to be honest. :(

Maybe it's just all new, but CIV 4 had so much more atmosphere and I felt attached to my cities and units. Here, nothing of the sort.

Maybe it's just the demo talking, and perhaps the full release will grow on me.

It left me feeling the same. There are some elements I like but even the landscape graphics seemed bland, despite being technically pretty. In fact, straight after finishing the demo I wanted to reinstall 4. I hope it grows on me.

Babylon is worth it -

UA - Ingenuity - Recieve a free Great Scientist when you reach Writing. Earn Great Scientists at double the usual rate.

UU - Bowman - 6 Strength, 8 Ranged (normal archer = 4 / 6)

UB = Walls of Babylon - +7.5 City Strength, City deals extra bombard damage (normal walls = +5 strength, no bombard bonus).

So iv been playing the demo and its just like the demo/first few games on 3 and 4, new, pretty and asking for my time to discover the whole game!

Got one question for everyone though, what sort of specs are you all playing it on?? Iv got it on my macbook pro (in windows 7) and it over heated it like a beast! More than i was expecting... So I was wondering at what sort of settings everyone else had and how it was playing??

What kind of sized map are you running on that?? Got a feeling im going to be building a pc for this game to play the larger games...

Just standard. Ideally grab a hex core f you want to play maxed out on the highest settings. Firaxis worked closely with Intel to implement good multi threading in this game.

Babylon is worth £10 plus the feeling you've been arse-raped? Seriously? On-release DLC is the devil and all you're doing is solidifying its status as an acceptable business practice. It's the main thing that's putting me off getting the game at all.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Something just didn't feel right. Let's just hope it's because it's "new".

Ditto. Just didn't sit well with me this demo. I was debating whether to get the demo. Wish I hadn't now lol. Anyway let's wait for the release proper.

I tried a huge map as England but I started a new game as it was me and Japan in S. America and it seemed like it'd be pretty boring.

Progress seems a lot slower compared to Civ 4. I'm around 200BC and only have a few units wandering about and 3 cities.

Takes a bit of getting used to but i'm sure once it gets going it'll be good. Combat seems interesting enough and at least i'm not just producing garrisons for my cities like in previous games.

Seems decent enough so far but it's annoying when your units trespass into a city states territory without realising.

Just played through the demo twice. Note all maxed on my specs nice and smooth only at 1680*1050 though.

1st go it was really just a fiddle getting used to the AI mainly and how to do things I wanted. The game felt odd and was not sure how I like some of the new features. I was **** though and didnt even manage to take out a city state.

2nd go I started to test it out a bit more. While I am not at all used to the game after 2 goes it seemed far too easy to expand. As Gold, science and culture are all seperately generated you end up with loads of gold really quick (Running around quickly scouting for ruins and city states and knocking out a few barbarian garrisons give you an incredibel boost at the start). Maybe this will level out past 100 turns as the effect of increased culture requirements to research social policies starts to hit.

After getting 4 cities up and runnign quick I decided to try take out the English and went for a swordman rush. I REALLY like the limited units per resource! 1 iron mine gave me about 6 swordmen max so I went out of my way to acquire additional mines (do they have diminishing returns?) so that I had the strength to take on their 3 cities simultaneously. While they did not put up much of a defense I immediately found i much prefer the new combat system.

To sum up I am loving some of the changes but do still feel a little detached, I am pretty confident I will get my monies worth out of this one though!

See, I hate this.

I know obviously its only 100 turns, as they'd give the game away otherwise.

I'd rather a demo of the last 100 turns, see how much its going to burn up time on massive maps and stupidly long games.

just had 2 demo goes, seems ok im still not 100% sure about the military changes and how the AI will crush me using them.

I quite like the new unit looks. Freakiest thing is the hexagonal world but i guess this makes for more interesting fighting and surrounding.

Cities defences seem a bit OTT now, going to war could be a real PITA.

TBH so far seems not too radically different to civ4-

cant wait to see all the later units, goodbye weekend..

My empire is so unhappy at the minute. I annexed one enemy city and it's slowed down out all growth in my empire.

I also think it was a mistake picking a huge map. :o Guess I'll see how the game pans out. I'm at 1030AD and most other civs only seem to have about 4 cities at the most.

How is Babylon £10???

£10 gets you a soundtrack plus Babylon. The soundtrack itself is worth £10, babylon is really just a freebie for the digital download.

Its ridiculous that people think they are paying a whole £10 extra just for Babylon. Read the description for what you get with the digital deluxe.

I hate DLC, but I were going to get the CE for the soundtrack anyway, so Babylon is just a free extra bonus.

The boxed CE costs another £10 more without babylon:

Digital Deluxe - £39.99 for soundtrack + babylon
Boxed collectors edition - £49.99 for soundrack, artbook and figurines.

You dont even get Babylon with the Boxed CE, thats exactly why I went with the digital deluxe instead.

If you dont think that this game is worth paying the price of the digital deluxe, or boxed collectors edition, then you probably dont deserve it anyway. 'Everything is worth what it's purchaser will pay for it', to quote the Civ 4 currency text, and the Civ series to me is worth far far more than any other video game, and I will gladly pay extra for collectors versions of it (I'm still planning on getting the boxed CE after it drops in price).

If the AI used embarking properly you would probably never win, that it doesn't means you can't lose. Playing as English with 4 cities at 1000AD I got into a fight with America who was the #1 civ, had like 10 cities had conquered nearly all of the continent to which I was just a little nub on the end of.

Eventually war comes, queue my 4 Longbow men + 2x Tiremes holding out against endless waves, killed easily 100x american units as they just relentlessly flung themselves at the narrow passage of land I had my citadel parked on. Which is why I think the AI needs a fair bit of work, not only did he have near zero naval power he could have from the very start just embarked a few units and wiped me out completely.

Every 50 or so turns he offers me a deal, these get more and more lucrative until the last deal which was all of his cities, gold, resources except his capital... bearing in mind I still had only a couple of longbow men and 4 cities yet it just seemed like if you deny AI deals enough they will end up handing everything over to you even if you have no chance of winning (which I didn't I probably never would have been able to push out)

Think this is just going to be a case of sticking to online play as the AI don't seem up to scatch :<
