Civilization V

im quite sure its been discussed but £10 for something that was usually made by the fan base in a few weeks is a con. Its just how prepared you are to be con'd that they rely upon.

love the new diplomacy screens too :O

So, for those people with truly ancient machines (i.e. ~4 years old ;) ), do we yet have a handle on what the lowest realistically playable spec is? I need to to let someone know if his Q6600/2GB RAM/X1950Pro (apparently) beast can play this turn-based game.

I reckon it wold struggle at best. The cpu is fine, but the RAM and graphics card are pretty far below the minimum recomended.
I think it might just about run, but it would be jerky and very poor (pretty much unplayable) tbh.

Why on earth buy babylon when a mod will be along soon enough. Remember its a highly modable game so anything like DLC will be able to be made by a good mod team.

A party.... damn, why wasn't I invited :p

I can see why it might make it more strategic but I also found it quite limiting. I tried and failed to take a city state last night that was stuck out on a little peninsula. This meant only two units could attack in one turn, with additional support from archers. Perhaps with additional game play time, and once I learn the intricacies of combat then I might appreciate it more.

Kind of makes sense though, one of the reasons why so many habitations were built on peninsulas historically was because they were much easier to defend than being built in the open. Sort of reflects that. I imagine with longer ranged units capable of hitting from tiles further away things become much easier to attack settlements like that (again reasonably similar to history)

Wait, you have an X1950Pro? My god i thought my gf was the only 1. Only this pc is also 1.8ghz dual core, not a 2.4ghz quad ><

Its gonna take at least 2 or 3 days to dl, but i'll go get the demo and see if i fail at this civ as much as i did the others.

Just finished playing the demo and i jumped straight onto the purchase button. Its amazing, its oozing with atmosphere (cant believe i said that about a turn based game) then new hex adds a very fun refreshing strategy.
I bought the deluxe version and im very happy to see:D

Quick question when i was playing i was told by an advisor that its best to have two seperate units attack a single enemy unit at once. I cant figure out how to do that?

Two things I noticed from last night's play that maybe somebody could clarify for me.
  1. I couldn't seem to be able to group units or have more than 1 unit on the same tile as you could in previous civs. Was I doing something wrong here? If you can't "stack" units then that sucks tbh.
  2. The other problem I had was similar, but didn't get a chance to test this as much is with garrisoning a city. I could only garrsion one unit. Does that mean I can still fortify other units within the city? I also found it a PITA to select units who were in a city.

Not sure if anyone answered the 2nd question, took me a few goes to work it out, if their is any unit in a city youget a circle symbol above the cities name if its military its to the left if its a worker its to the right

The thing I am least sure of i think from just playing off the demo is the reduction in trade offs. Some big important trade offs seem to have been removed.

1) worker production does not halt city growth
2) no immediate trade off between gold and using it to fund science or culture. Looks like you have to do this in the long term through building city buildings.
3) you do not choose 1 civic at a time (hence loosing the benefits of the others)

I found those to be critical parts of decision making in civ4.

I too loved the demo! As for attacking, I think you have to attack with first then attack with second afaik, that way it prevents the enemy from healing, reinforcing etc.

My first game as the persian my warrior got upgraded to an immortal, I found London about 5 tiles away from my capital, so parked the immortal on a hill next to the city, i captured any workers/settlers escaping and soaked up the damage and XP, I ended up having 6 promotions on it by the time I had amassed some archers to take out the city :) then I went round and destroyed 5 barbarian encampments with this upgraded immortal ended up with 1400 gold at turn 100 :)

I was raking in the gold as I placed my city next to gems with a mine as well as discovering 5 city states.
Can't wait for friday

This game is more CPU intensive than GPU intensive.

It is multithreaded and the more cores you have the better, but any card as powerful as the recommended spec (4850 / 9800 GT / GTX 450 / 5770) will be enough to handle the graphics on maximum (just no tessellation on DX9 / 10 cards).

Most people whine about their graphics not being good enough when that isnt what Civ V stresses at all. The best upgrade for Civ V would be a hex core CPU, not a GPU if you are already at the recommended spec.

Babylon and Persia are the best civs for peacetime economies (build up a Great Scientist farm with Babylon, and do anything with Persia that gets you golden ages). Japan is the best war civ, and England is OP as long as the AI isnt building any navies or embarking units. I really hope they fix that, right now Barbarians have better naval tactics with their galleys than any of the AI does.

Its incredible how often great strategy games simply cannot get naval AI done correctly, the total war series was always a mess when it came to naval AI, as were quite a few other top titles.
