Civilization V

Playing a huge earth map game as Napolean on King. The game is starting to get tricky on this difficulty for me. Though I am starting to experiencing the odd AI people have mentioned. I've been sandwiched between the arabs an americans who seem to be baying for my blood. Managed to hold them both off at the same time focusing solely on military production just to get through, then gave up and offered me a load of cities, which i accepted... then the next 2 closest civs america and japan decided to try it on. I am holding the japs off but aint seen the germans. Trying to turn my infrastructure around 1st to get a happiness barrier then to focus for a science win is going to be hard with all the was mongering going on!

Still going in my current game (Epic, Huge Earth Map, Emperor difficulty) , turn 400 now, just 5 nations remaining and I'm the 2nd largest (in terms of size anyway). Doing well on Emperor for the first time, been a learning experience to play differently to the way I would on Civ 4 but I am starting to get to grips with it now.

My favourite civ at the moment? Hmm..not sure, I always play on random so sometimes I get the same civ, but I quite like the Germans as their colour looks pretty nifty when its covering the map. Greece were fun too.

Ooh finally caught out on Prince difficulty. I have quite a large border with Persia and started seeing Immortals and swordsmen showing up. Anticipating an attack but not too worried because my army consists mainly of riflemen, I took my army of a dozen riflemen (going for a science victory, so I have a small army) to the border a couple of turns in advance of him declaring war.

I easily saw off his attack but then a couple of rounds later a HUGE immortal army appeared on the edge of my capital, left undefended. Luckily the crap AI sat there for my riflemen to show up, but the war was messy and now I'm defenceless!

never ending golden ages and that bank that is a happy maker too....

i just finished a game on +70 happiness... that never happens when i play.

Yeah it gets mental if you sit in golden ages trying to build all the culture and happiness improvements! Im on +93 happiness and +1300 culture (having a look at a cultural victory even though I have giant death robots!)

How exactly do you sit in golden age anyway? I mean short of producing GP constantly? Its not like happiness counts for the next golden age until you end your current 1.

I've not been able to finish a game due to the game freezing with the sound looping and a message in the background saying that it has stopped responding. :(

I reached all the way to 2020AD the first time it happened and no matter what I did the game would crash each time I loaded the most recent autosave.

Well you get 50% longer golden ages for being Persia and if your picking the right social policies you then reduce the amount of happiness to enter into a golden age so at the most you can have 10-15 normal turns before another 15-20 turns of golden age (after adding a few extra great people as half of them arnt that useful out side of more golden time)

Also the wonder Chitzen Itza makes your golden age 50% longer, so that + Persia + great people = very long golden age. And whilst in golden age Persian units get +1 move and 10% combat bonus.

yeah never ending is not strictly true but if you plug the gaps with ones triggered by great people its 80%+ of the time

I'm really thinking of buying this but I'm wondering something.

When you play online, can you only win by conquering and war? Or is it possible to win in other ways like culture, happiness, size, resources etc?

I'm not too much of a fan of war games where the online bit is basically build an army and rush as fast as you can.

hehe gave a military city state 10 mech infantry and watched him cut a swathe into the Greek scum

Yeah it actually worked for a change, sometimes they just screw it up. They were at war at the time, i guess that's the key point.

Anyone know why the railways look different? :)

To answer my own question if it hasn't been already... :)

The fancy roads and rail roads are the trade routes. Shame really as they look much nicer then the little crappy versions. When you build harbours pretty much all the trade routes disappear as the harbour to harbour trade route seems to take precedent (also annoying as it says the trade route is broken when the harbour is finished).

Fair enough, i was taking never ending at face value :p

I've seen a few policies that would obviously reduce the time between them but i figured with it going up so fast that you'd wind up having a very long downtime eventually?

Is anyone else finding Catherine loves to build massive sprawling empires with tons of cities? She also just loves to annihilate everything she sees, including all the city states I'm allied with. She's a PIA.

My current game is interesting. I'm allied with nearly all the remaining city states and it is only me and her left. So I could storm in and take her capital for a domination victory, it's on the coast as well making this a little easier. Or I could go for a diplomatic victory as all the city states hate Catherine. Or possibly a science victory. Loving the options I have in this game :)

Havent noticed it, then again I play on random personalities so my Katherine is probably different to yours :)

she tried with me, and i was very weak compaired to her. Yet i managed to defend against her attack and while she was weak/still moving her forces towards me, another civ took all but one of her cities.

I then got to the point where i couldnt make enough gold to have a army, so gave all my troops to my city state ally so he could do some damage instead.

thats where i left the game so far, getting a bit bored of having to give up my army's due to no gold. What am i doing wrong?

Connecting your cities up with roads for trade? Building markets and using specialists in them? Improving resource tiles? Monitoring the dispersion of your civilians so that they are working the right tiles ? (leaving it on auto often doesnt pick the best selection in my experience, so I manage all my cities civilians myself), keeping building projects in line with your income?
