Civilization V

its because they removed the stack of doom (multiple units on each tile), that seems to have killed the AI in a sense. AI never been THAT great, but what gets me, is as computers get better/faster, the AI seems to have got worse, and thats in ALL games. AI for instance in race games its TERRIBLE now. GP2 times it used to be great. :(

Civ 2 music = win

I actually like the music in both Civ IV and V a lot better than the earlier games though, particularly the China and Korea themes in Civ V.

I finished developing my specialist economy as Korea in my current game, this time Isabella was friendly, gave me defensive pacts, and conquered Montezuma for me wooot!

Complete military negligence for the win? :p

As soon as Isabella stops signing defensive pacts, I build some modern Siege units. I have Brandenburg Gate + Heroic Epic + Barracks / Armory / Military academy set up in my capital, and then just need to place an Armory in my two coastal cities to be able to build ships with 2 promos, along with land units with 3 promos and morale boost from my capital. It only takes 3 turns on epic for me to pop uber artillery units, so I could either go on a modern era conquerage spree, or just continue my culture win.

Just curious as to what you people consider to be the best scenario packs?

Just bought the vikings pack, I'm quite interested in viking history and vikings are just cool right.

They're ok, but by the time you get to use the Beserkers in force some people already have Muskets.

I find that unless you get a mod to restrict tech, science outpaces the game just to fast for my liking.

I would like to play the game but after developers nuked the game with updates I cant as it doesnt pass the black screen of death at the start after selecting Direct X version. I've through ALL of the workarounds on their site and on steam and others and nothing works, the game was working at some point as I used to play it a fair bit before work got busier.
I have to say I have a bit of rage about this as they have caused it. The problem is all over the web and there is a lot of people affected.

That's just boring, slowing down the game in all aspects is no fun.

Waiting 40 turns for a Crosbowman is boring as hell.

Science needs to be slowed down to that extent while the rest isn't.
That's how I feel anyway.
40 turns? What are you doing with your cities  You aren't supposed to build units, that's what gold is for ;)

I think epic speed is perfect, it does make a little easier so you need to bump the difficulty up to Immortal or Diety but at least it's a bit of a challenge.

Meh I prefer to get the stop tech mods.

Means I stay in what ever Era I like.

Nothing better then jsut having rifleman and cannons!

Steam just downloaded a 29.2MB patch, and my Civ 5 is at version 1.0.1.511, tho I can't find a changelog. Anyone have any info on the patch? Not played the game in a while, might give it another go.

The game is best at Epic speed. Normal is too fast, Marathon is too slow.

Epic is really a lot more balanced that the others.

Hummm they patched the mac version last week so it synced up to the windows version yet some of the changes appeared to be new for it :S I'm assuming the windows version now matches last weeks mac patch log....

From the Steam forum:

12/19/2011 69.4 mb patch

release notes

Quote:
[MULTIPLAYER]
- Significant improvements to general multiplayer stability.
- Significant improvements to Hot-Join stability.
- Multiplayer now using the same AI move caching as single player, improving turn-times significantly.
- Lobby improvements: We now display game details in the lobby list (players in each game, map size, map type, DLC required, etc.).
- Host can now kick players from the staging room when loading a save (if a player cannot return to a game, the game can now be continued by the rest of the players).
- Found and corrected additional causes of Out-of-Sync.
- Exploit: Corrected an exploit that allowed players on the same team to trade cities back and forth to auto-heal it.
- Exploit: Corrected an exploit that allowed players on the same team to trade cities back and forth to generate endless City Strikes.
- Exploit: Corrected an exploit that allowed a player to “lag” the UI to gain multiple free techs.

[UI]
- Change “Load Game” save sorting to be “Last Modified” by default.

[BUGS]
- When scrapping a unit, make sure any “cargo” units are scrapped as well.
- When a unit is destroyed that is carrying another unit, make sure to kill both (missiles sometimes lingered).
- Corrected a bug that was causing eliminated Civ’s to not generate notifications correctly.
- Changed notification language for when a Research or Trade deal is cancelled due to the AI running out of funds to pay for it (per-turn deal), or are eliminated. It was currently displaying a “because of war” notification which is incorrect.
- Corrected an issue that could cause unhappiness from city count and number of specialists to become incorrect over the course of a long game.
- Changed Frigate obsolete tech to Combustion.
- Fixed Korean science building exploit.
- Fixed a problem with City Strike that gave the user the impression that they could not end their turn, when in reality, city strike was still active.
- Crash: Fixed a crash that could occur in hot-seat when exiting to the main menu.
- Crash: Fixed a crash that could occur when a unit was eliminated by standing too close to a Citadel.

I thought that the korea building exploit had already been fixed. Why was I never using it!

2000+ BPT by around 1700 AD with 4 cities in specialist mode is crazy imba enough for Korea anyway.

Hey folks. Started up another game of this the other day and really enjoying it.

However I am getting situations where I have massive tax defecit. Tried building money making buildings but doesnt seem to be doing much.
Any advice about how I can generate income? What land improvements help with income?

Also another question, does a strategic or luxury resource need to be connected via road to have access to it?

Military units take a good chunk out of your income so don't go mad building them. Also be selective about which buildings you have in your cities as the maintenance costs can kill you if you want absolutely everything.

Building cities near rivers is very advantageous as each tile next to a river gives +1 gold as well as the normal food etc. I'm pretty sure you don't need a road on resources, you can check you have the resources active by holding your mouse over the happiness counter at the top of the screen.

Military units I dont have a great deal of but admitedly I started to build one of each type of building in each city (5 cities or so).
Mind you most of them were on rivers.

Thanks for your advice Phil. I think roads killed me a bit since they have an upkeep of 1 gold also (and I was linking them to many resources).

Just a heads up, but this is currently a fiver in the Steam weekend sale (deal lasts for about another 23 hours). I hadn't bought this yet, but for that price, it's worth a try. I'm downloading it now :)
