Civilization V

any reviews of the expansion?

I have it and its pure awesome. Take a look at this, how could you not want to add this to your game of Civ V? If you play the game, you know you have to have this:

Also when you complete various policy trees, you can spend faith on different kinds of GPs - Freedom for Great Artists, Order for Great Engineers, Rationalism for Great Scientists, Commerce for Great Merchants.

I'm liking the added extras, makes the game a bit more enjoyable instead of just skipping through a load of turns sometimes. The new city state system makes it more interesting for a diplo victory.

Had quite a few people warn me of attacks though and never ever came.

AI builds a lot more boats now, not sure on how they fare with landing parties yet.

Have they messed about with the difficulties? I've had to turn it way up since I got the expansion.

Expansion worth a punt then?

I'd say if you didn't like the changes from Civ 4 to 5 then no because in the end it is still Civ 5. If you enjoyed Civ 5 a bit then definately.

Religion and espionage + the new civs and some other features have definately improved it though so for £12 I thought I'd give it a go and playing Civ for the first time in ages and actually enjoying civ 5.

Having got back in to Civ 5 lately the expansion is well timed. My copy is on order for £13 and the "let's play" vids I've seen look promising.

The youtube clips from bhavv are very nice but it's a shame they didn't use that intro on the original Civ 5. It would've spared my escape key some serious punishment. :D

I love some of the changes by the AI.

I was playing as Egypt on continents and I started on a lone island with no one else. So I built up my civilization and skimped on military.

I started getting spies stealing tech and viewing my cities (I presumed) I got a message from Genghis Khan saying the Roman empire had sent out a surprise task force to invade.

I was sceptical but sent a privateer out north to see,to my shock there were 3 ironclads, 3 cannons several knights etc. all heading over.

They landed up north and I only just managed to fend them off with my Navy and rush buying units.

Was pretty cool to see the AI launch an operation over the sea.

very cool, especially with the warning!

Funnily enough, I still havnt watched the intro in game, as soon as the game starts loading, im mashing esc esc esc esc ...

Actually I've also still got the intro disabled via ini tweaks, and have no idea how to turn it back on.

If the expansion improves the AI to that degree, think that will pretty much seal the deal for me.

Creates a pretty cool 'I'll scratch your back' vibe -- you find stuff out, if you tell them they will most likely share with you to.

My only hope for future patches is that religion is worked into the diplomacy, sharing the same religion giving positive bonuses, trying to forcefully spread religion having ramifications etc.

Other than that still really enjoying it atm, lots of mad stuff happening - just discovered away from both continents a huge island the Germans have had to themselves from the start and have built themselves up as a bit of a super power in secret! :(

There's still a lot of bugs with the AI -

1) Spain signs friendship pacts with me and Sweden
2 Positive rep with Sweden for same friend, and then they want to be my friend too.
3) No one seems to like Boudica, and Sweden asks me for a joint war on her.
4) I think that if I say yes, relations will skyrocket with Sweden (pretty nice to do with their UA bonus that applies to their friends too).
5) Me and Sweden now at war with Boudica.
6) 4 turns later, I get duo denounced by my friends Spain and Sweden for being a warmongering menace to world (lolwut? Ask me to join you in war then hate me for it).
7) Sweden and Spain now both hostile.
8) About 10 turns later, Sweden and Spain double backstab me, even though I did everything, and only what they asked for, and now in at war with my former friends and boudica.

Bipolar AI is crazy.

Anyone else finding the AI acting randomly weird. Playing s game sharing a continent with Russia. Denmark whose isolated on another continent started hating me for no reason. All our history was positive and I never did anything (like start a war or take a city state etc)

Also Russia was hell bent on taking me out from the moment we met. She started a war with me being much stronger military wise, but I defended every city and ended up taking 3 of hers eventually. She kept asking for peace but with ridiculous demands from me when she was in no position to ask for them. My military advisor kept pushing me to negotiate peace too... even when I became much stronger than her :/

This never happened before the expansion.

Denmark had a case of bipolar disorder in your game, Sweden in mine.

Its 10x worse with Sweden because their UA benefits their friends. I don't ever want to bother playing as Sweden now because they need multiple friendship pacts for the UA to work well, and the AI rarely ever signs or stays friends for long enough.

I can imagine Sweden being powerful in team vs team multiplayer though, and the more friendship pacts they have the better. The other team mates could focus on offense and defence while the Sweden focuses on Great Person production.

In single player Austria would be much better because their UB gives a flat 25% bonus to GP production, while Sweden needs to maintain 3 friends for +30%, which is simply not happening against the AI.

Oh also Greece and Korea are broken by the update. Siege units were vastly weakened but given a 200% city attack bonus. Hwachas were buffed tremendously, but with no city attack bonus. Now the fun part - build catapults, upgrade to hwacha, retain the 200% city attack bonus on a unit with almost the same ranged strength as artillery but available in at the start of the renaissance.

As for Greece, you can cut influence degradation with city states all the way down to 0% now. Every time you then gain influence, it is permanent and cumulative giving you permanently allied city states.

I was shocked today when I noticed that since the exp, ships can capture cities!
Here's me ignoring some greek ironclads attacking a city I just captured, 2 turns later I lost it by some naval buggers .

Ai is stronger in my experience, I'm fighting against an AI ahead in tech, population, food and GNP. Only thing I have going for me is production, but I have a lot of catching up to do against one of the ai's.

Despite me having ALL the city states, and the only other major civ being on my side in the war (3 have been eliminated already, 2 by me, 1 by the ''strong'' ai opponent), it's going to be a tough one! They made a diplo victory harder too, think you could get to the tech sooner before...

I was playing at Emperor difficulty level, and now I'm struggling at ''king''.
Then again it has been a while since I played and I was clumsy at start.

My old tactic has been buggered too, usually I had 3-4 Maritime city states boosting my growth a lot, this game there was only ONE (due to the new types)... Along with Freedom, Statue of liberty, I was used to a specialist economy. I also used to sacrifice all my great generals for a golden age, now I can't. A lot of things I used to take advantage of, have been balanced back :(.
