Civilization V

Can't get a full game of this to last. I get up to the point where you start seeing aircraft for the first time, but the time it takes between turns is just so off putting.

Even with a small map and only 4-6 civs, it's just agony waiting all the time. :<
Is this with G&K only?

With a machine of your spec you shouldn't be having much trouble? I only have a lowly E8400 at 3.8ghz with 4gb of RAM and a 5850, I run a large map with 10 civs no problem at all. This is vanilla Civ V I haven't bought G&K yet.

I dont have the expansion, I dug out the original to see if I could get my excitment going enough to make buying G&K worth it.

I don't think it did the trick tho :(

It's not really performance issues, it's just the time between turns get longer and longer and I guess you could say I'm not very patient. Plus I love playing one-city challenge, so there isn't a whole lot to do with one city a lot of the time, which means you're waiting more and more.

I think the points about Aircraft are fair. The game does get incredibly annoying when you amass a large air force. Watching the same bomber flying the same route, especially if its a long range attack... It does bore me to tears.

I played a game at the weekend and eventually had to abandon it as it kept locking up/ crashing. I had 2 large army groups 20+ units in each and every 3 or 4 turns it would just never make it out of the PCs move phase... I could still scroll about and examine stuff but for all intents and purposes it had crashed.

That was the only game ive had so far thats been crashing.

I forgot how good the English Longbow is - Try it with G&K - 6 of them can just roll across the map destroying cities... its ridiculous.. Im sure they had a city attack penalty in vanilla civ... They are more powerful than rocket artillery relativity speaking

I suppose if you're only taking 20-30 secs for own turn then waiting 20-30 secs for the AI to make their moves feels longer. Not so much of an issue when you're spending a few minutes on your own turn.... glad of the rest lol!

Enable quick combat, it's a god send ;) Also the new patch allows you to turn this on and off mid game.

Longbows are lethal but still nowhere near as powerful as Mongol Keshiks :D

Downloaded the demo for G&K yesterday afternoon. Went off to do something while it downloaded, then completely forgot about it for the rest of the day. Will have a look at it when I get home :p

I'm so jealous of you all, I've never been so hooked on a demo before. :(

They are remarkably addictive.

I've purposefully not started a G&Ks game until I know I have some time off/Less demanding work days. I don't think my body could take the further sleep deprivation it is suffering from Witcher 2.

I just wasted 20 turns on attacking a city because I forgot that the last hit need to be by a melee unit. I usually just use melee as a beginning unit and forget about them once I get a decent range attacker. they never really explained that in the tutorials >.<

If people are having random lock ups and crashes in the middle of play a game then try this.

Load up a saved game then once that's loaded then load up the save game you actually want to play. Worked for me but I haven't had any crashes since the add on.

I'm thinking of getting Civilization V for my 13" macbook pro!

I've never played a Civilization game before but after watching the reviews of it I understand its a turn based game.

Is it worth getting if you've never played a civ game before?

Yes!! Just make sure you can afford to lose hours and hours of your life. You get the classic 'oh, just one more turn' syndrome :D

Ha one of those games is it - dam my gaming addiction!

I've been reading reviews on it and its getting slated by a lot of people who have bought it saying its not as good as the other civs?

A lot of people didn't take to it (not immediately anyway) because of the changes it made to the combat system where you can't stack units on the same tile. In civ V only 1 unit can occupy a hex. To me, i think it makes the combat system much more challenging and tactical rather than making stacks of doom and throwing them against a city for example.

Overall I think its more of a wargame than previous civs.
