Civilization V

I have to say I much prefer the Gods & Kings expansion to the original Civ 5 game, it's slower paced and combat especially city sieges are a lot harder (which is how it should be when you look at the history of siege warfare) now. I'm still not sure how religion works in terms of how you convert your citizens to your faith and I have no idea of how religious pressure is calculated.

It can get annoying late game with turns taking longer and longer but that's the same with any like this (Total War for example), the more you expand the more AI calculations your CPU has to handle.

Struggling to see the point of faith. I can found a religion that helps me with a minor bonus or generates more faith, but for what purpose? Is there a faith victory condition?

Religion helps achieve all other victory conditions. You can heal units almost to full in a single turn after capturing a city, gain 5+ Culture and 3+ Happiness per city you control, and City-State influence shrinks 25% slower when the C-S follows your faith. It even helps with the Space Race if you don't mind an early game sacrifice, as one Pantheon gives a global production bonus up to 15%.

Try playing Egypt, selecting the +15% production when building Ancient/Classical Wonders for Pantheon, then purchase Aristocracy as a Policy while driving for Great Library and select Tithe/Cathedrals for your religion. You will soon think that "minor bonus" is a misnomer.

Cheers I'll give them a try.

Can anyone recommend some essential mods for Civ 5? I've finally re installed it after having played it once since release... The trouble is there are so many mods I am finding it overwhelming.

I'v been using it as a happiness generator as it takes away the need to drive for a large territory for resources (ie its the most manageable way to keep everyone happy early game). The religion buildings work well for this as they don't cost much faith to build.

There aren't any... :p

It really depends what you want from the game and what you are frustrated by from the main game.

Infoaddict and Civ V Unofficial Patch at the moment.

The modder behind the patch will in the near future be releasing a rebalancing mod called GEM based upon the Vanilla Enhanced Mod he created.

Has anybody had this before

Playing on huge map with pangea
Game time maximum number of turns
Everything maxed out
2 civilizations
no city states
Huge civilization with lots of cities (I like to build)

What happens is near the end of the game when satalite tech is discovered and reveals the world map. A lot of the tile improvements become invisable. Has this happened to anyone else. I have had this problem on 3 different PCs.

^^^ I was having certain graphical issues when I used the latest NVida beta driver but those have stopped since I used the WHQL ones. Also those issues, for me, were more significant when I started using 2560x1440 rather than the 1080p resolution of my previous 24" monitor.

I have found some of the nvidia drivers to be a bit buggy but the problem I described in my previous post is an ongoing one.

The first setup I used when the problem first occured several years ago was 2x hd 5970 setup in quadfire I could get about 2/3 the way though the game before tiles started to not display their improvements.

The next setup was 2 x gtx 590 in quad sli with which I could get about 3/4 the way though the game before tiles failed to display their improvements.

Im now using 2 x gtx 690s in quad sli and I can get to the end of a game before tiles fail to display improvements. If I carry on playing after I achieve victory the tiles fail to display their improvements.

The 3 setups I listed above are on 3 different PCs.

As I said in my previous post this problem only happens in huge map games. It makes no difference changing the video settings or resolutions.

You did not say that the problem only happens for you when you are playing a huge map, you just noted that was the choice you had used in the example given.

The commonality, in your case, seems to be using SLI/ Crossfire.

I would doubt that it is maximising the memory of the GPU as I have seen it max out at around 1.4GB. But that is on a large map, late era and fully revealed. I tend to no tplay huge maps as I find them way too boring.

The issue I had was that the game was not filling the screen completely, in terms of the terrain graphics. This has been noted on resolutions above 1080p but was totally fixed for me when I used the latest WHQL drivers.

Yes it only happens on a huge map.

I once thought it might be vram usage but when I checked the game was only using 1.5gb.

When you mention terrain graphics do you mean things like farms missing on tiles (all you can see is grass) even though if you hold the pointer over the tile it will tell you theres a farm there.

No it would be the terrain itself which was missing...

...it would only happen when using the beta drivers and only then at 2560x1440. Running at 1080p and there was no problem.

Can you do something similar and show with a screenshot the issues you are having...?

If you then use a map size less than huge your problem would then be ok...?
What happens, just for testing, if you use a huge map and then load that problem game vis the Direct X 9 exe...?

The other problem I get that I forgot to mention in my original post is that there is a 50% chance the saved game will not load at all.

As you can see from the pic there are no farms showing (they are there but not showing on screen)

Yes

Just tried Direct X 9 in the pic above - same result.

How strange. Do they show in the Strategic view..?

I can#t help but point to each of the computers you have tried have cards with two GPU's and they are in crossfire / sli configurations.

To test the above just upload your last saved game and I will load it for you on my PC, if you wish.
