Civilization VI

Anyone having issues today?

Friend and I tried to play and we both have different issues after the latest update (via steam).

Mine crashes during any game load, his is missing the two expansion packs so even if mine did load we can't play multiplayer.

Now both in the process of reinstalling the game. Not going to be buying the DLC if they can't even do basic debugging.

Yeah, you're right, just double checked in game (my bad). Still, you can get some really sizable Science bonuses quite early if you can get them next to a bunch of farms/planations. I'm still finding that I keep having to push housing and it takes away a lot of the advantage that Maya gets. Anyone else had any luck getting around the housing issue with Maya? Even the Granary only gets you so far.

I've had no problem with it. Just specialise in Housing/Amenities for your Civics. You're building tall anyway so you can have a governor with two promotions in every city easily enough. My capital is over 20 pop by 1300AD and I have another city at 25. Your chief problem as Maya will be obtaining strategic resources in quantity, so while you don't get the normal water bonuses it's still worth building near rivers to take advantage of Hydroelectric Plants. You also want to go in hard on influencing City-States to get their resources.

Working fine for me in multiplayer today

Playing this last night, free version from giveaway. Was a bit slow at first but soon got going.

Noob question on attacking - can only have 1 unit per tile? I was struggling to get a sufficient army together and close enough to an enemy city to wipe it out.

You can combine units into corps (2) and army’s (3) later in the game.

You should be able be able to get enough round a city, you need two layers of units, melee units in the adjacent tiles and ranged units one back. You might need a few replacements as you lose units.

Make use of hills and forests for defence and don’t use melee to attack across streams/rivers if it can be helped. make use of ranged units like catapults (Or archers if you don’t have screws to catapults yet but they are far less effective) to soften the defences and melee units you storm the city once it’s defences are lowered.

Hmm thanks, same for fortifying your own cities? Only 1 unit in the city itself.

I've seen Honey as a resource...I dont remember that from before? Or has my memory just faded?

Its new along with Maize

I have some time this evening. Apocalypse mode = on. Let’s see what happens

Edit:
What do you do on appease the gods emergency? No idea how to get points on that one

I think that is the soothsayer sacrifice action

You need to also think about zone of control and getting cities sieged. So you can generally siege and take a city with 3 melee units. Early game city states will be hard to take because of walls, but any non walled city should be fairly easily takeable with half a dozen units (4 melee and 2 ranged), you just need to wear their army down with clever attacking and defending as you work towards the city. Dont rush to get in there and use pillage (I generally try to pillage farms over districts as repair from builder is better than repair with production) and upgrades to gain back health. Also dont be afraid to rest for a turn (especially if you have them sieged) as higher health = higher damage.

It also doesn’t mean you can’t have units outside the city to defend either. Calvary can be really good for this as some can move after they have attacked and can move big distances in one turn. They can easily pick off vulnerable ranged units needed to siege a city, melee units in their own are pretty ineffective once you have walls in place.

Soften up units with the ranged attacks from the city and encampment and the flank with the Calvary from the side and then run them away again. Just watch out for units with spears!

You can also exploit the zone of control to your advantage, units can only move one square when adjacent to an enemy or hostile city. You can use ranged units behind your city and enemies will not be able to get to them easily and you can use those turns to soften them up significantly or destroy them.

Yes coastal cities can be easily defended against land attacks in the early game but in the late game they can be sieged easily from sea, late game boats which have been promoted can attack from 3 squares away and are very powerful. As can late game artillery for that matter.

That's kind of the problem though, you're devoting a lot into specialising for housing when you don't need to with other Civ's, so the advantage starts to be lost over time. I had another go with them though and going heavy-gold seems a much better option and just buying everything you need out-right.

Just in case anyone's interesting, there's a great post on reddit showing a perfect layout for Maya to cram 12 additional cities in a 6 tile radius. Here's a direct link: https://i.redd.it/9f6s6qcfq8051.jpg

Noob question here guys but Im struggling with how long it takes to progress anything. Ive started a few games now and gone through like 100 turns and thousands of years on the game clock, and i still only have a couple of cities, a few units. Everything takes 10+ turns to build and most of the time Im just clicking though the turn button waiting for things to be ready. Am I playing it right?

theres an option for game speed when you start the game.

I guess you're on normal speed, you can do slower or faster so research takes less time, things build quicker etc (probably not an option that can be changed once you started already)

Has anyone noticed an increase in barbarian activity with the latest patch? Not just a little bit, but a lot.

I played a game just now on Prince level to try out the new rules. (I played on Apocalypse) Within about 3 turns I had 7 barbarians surrounding my city. They kept on pumping out new units at what seemed like a much faster rate than normal. Am I imagining that?

Seems about the same for me, if you let their scouts find you and get back to their camps, they'll start spawning lots of units - and they'll spawn cavalry units too if there are horses nearby (I think 4 tiles or so? from their camp). You might have just gotten unlucky with nearby barbarian camps.
