Cleaning your ears

We have to be careful as this is verging on medical but I have used olive oil before and it works really well. A couple of years ago I caught an ear infection whilst in Turkey (craphole of the world) and my ears started to produce copious volumes of black sticky wax, like road tar. I had major problems with excessive wax after that to the point where one ear became blocked and the other was getting close. I went to the quak and the nurse syringed them with what felt like a firehose at 200 psi!

Worked though.

You live in gloucester and still have the sense to call Turkey the craphole of the world?

Im a bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to cleaning my ears, i reckon i must clean them twice a day, i hate the waxy feeling inside.

It wierd i know.

I also find it strangely satisfying when i clean my ears too.

wtf?, olive oil :p

Cotton bud is fine every once in a while, I remember this guy at school his mum would not let him clean his ears with a cotton bud :D too dangerous apparently

lol i remember the end coming off deep in my ear when i was younger, cue A&E shoving scary tweezers in my ear to fish the bugger out :(

Ive had that many ear infections Ive lost count. Due to a couple of perforated eardrum's in the past. Infact I have one now. I get so much wax out its not funny anymore, I do enjoy a good clean though, squeaky clean you can hear!

I've had it done twice. It feels very odd but it didn't hurt for me at all, either time although the feeling of water pulsing on my ear drum felt so weird. Loved the crystal clear hearing afterwards though :D

The lady gave me a leaflet about olive oil, although I don't bother with any of it, as if I have another problem I'll just go back to the doctors and it'll be sorted in 2 mins :D

Where did you get this done? I wouldn't mind having this done :)

I don't use olive oil but I have a 4 inch nail specificly kept aside for cleaning my ears. I've had it about 6 years now, seems to do the job well.

Rofl. :D I'm sure that's something you will pass down to the next generation and so on.

Edit: Oh you're a Lurgan man, that explains the craziness! :p

warm olive oil

When as kids used to get ear aches mum would use warm olive oil to help unblock and sooth the ears, pop some cotton wool in afterwards and leave for a while.

Worked a treat

I never clean my ears because my parents never brought me up to do so. Is that why I'm so deaf? Damn :( Definitely going to start now though will pickup myself some olive oil next time I go shopping.

My local doctors, although I've only been when my ears have been completely blocked with wax and I couldn't hear much at all and everything was muffled.

I think if your ears aren't fully blocked then you wouldn't notice a difference in your hearing either. I think it's just when you have muffled hearing your brain tries to compensate, but when you can hear properly again and your brain will be over compensating for a short while, and the result is super hearing :D

I've done online hearing tests with Shure e2cs and my hearing is 'Normal' however I sometimes struggle to hear people in moderate/loud situations so I'm wondering if it's worth a try  We were watching Pirates of the caribbean 2 on Frontrow a few nights ago and I couldn't understand that weird african lady at all :(

I have the same problem, and have had for quite some time. I have difficulty hearing something over background noise, and have trouble with accents. Also I have a constant ringing in my ears - A result of too many gigs :o

Probably be worth asking your doctor and see what they say, although if they're anything like mine, they will tell you to try olive oil for a few days first.

Theres Stuff called "audiclean" you get from Boots (dont somehow thing they are a competitor lol). And its fantastic for cleaning ears out.

I once had ears cleaned at ENT once - and my left ear had a lump of wax the size of a big pea in it ewww.... After that life was painful - a bus would pass me and be soo loud :s

Sorry bumping this one as well because it's really annoying having to turn my head side on to actually hear what anyone is saying :P:o.

I get the impression Audiclean isn't intended for really blocked ears. I need to find something a little more effective than olive oil or hydrogen peroxide.

Is it true that earwax build up can cause vertigo and loss of equilibrium?

Allegedly yes, this could be a complete coincidence but whilst I am absolutely find walking etc - I have definitely noticed I am touch less sure footed at random occasions.

This thread has gotta be a record for necro bumps surely?

Relevant to me atm though, as i'm getting older my ears are getting hairier and seem to get a lot more wax build up.
