I re-applied the tim using Arctic Silvers instructions (line) but Im tempted to remove the 4 clips from the freezer and use 4 nut and bolts and insulated washers.

If both surfaces are nice and flat that may be a good idea as you suggest to try the nut and bolt approach. Do not be over tighten the bolts or to much pressure will damage the chip.

Here are a few pics to give you an idea how I lapped the CPU and cooler.

The CPU and Cooler pre lapped.

Lapping area using a mirror as a base and 600, 800, 1200 and finally 1200 wet and dry paper.

Cpu after lapping with TIM applied.

Cpu and cooler removed to see how the tim spreads, better than before.

Checked cooler and cpu with blade, both look ok but the blade was used.

Regards.

PS,

The temps are currently 48 47 44 44 at 455 X 7 = 3185Mhz

Running super PI and its getting as far as the 8M test but when I run the 16M test it comes back with the error: Not exact in round.

Not run the 32M test.

PS,

Just remembered that I've only got 1 stick of 1GB ram in the system. If I insert all 4 the system does not boot so Im trying one stick at a time.

PPS,

Just tried the 32M test and came back with the same error.

Realist can you test the ram using memtest. It would appear the ram has errors. i am sorry to say the will require an RMA ( If that is the case they normally ask if if you have tested the modules using memtest)

Run it as default if you leave it to run over night even better due to the number of passes

Edit re-reading posts above

The temps are currently 48 47 44 44 at 455 X 7 = 3185Mhz

These temps are at idle with the new tim application?

From the above pictures (Post 202) the lapped CPU and HSF base appear flat (Good lapping by the way) the tim is evenly spread as well between the two (visable contact surface area)

The option is: possibly further lapping the CPU will reduce temps further and possible upgrade of Cooler?

What type of case cooling air flow do you have/ type of case out of interest.

The case is a mini tower nothing special just a cheap glass sided tower. At this time the sides and top are off the case so there is plenty of air going through.

I'm running Memtest on the main machine (laptop now) and so far its shown up:st

Tst: 7
Pass: 2
Failing Address: 000b5485990 2900.3Mb
Good: 70910c3e
Bad: 70b10c3e
Err-Bits: 00200000
Count: 1
Chan: Nowt written in here

So how do I find out which stick is knackered? or has the error?

seems like an abundance of TIM in #202, imo. I'm not suggesting that this is the root cause, mate, but I'm not sure its helping. How's about trying the credit-card/razor-blade smoothing out?

That was not the final tim I applied, that was a load I put on to see if there was any high/low spots.

If you look at the pic above that one, you will see I used Arctic Silver per their instructions.

Regards.

Morning.

Well after a sleep I decided to run each stick with Memtest and low and behold 3 sticks out of the 4 I have come back with errors.

Now, is memtest good enough for me to RMA the sticks!

Should I keep with OCZ or try another make!

Regards.
