Cod4 and 1080P

What PC games render fine at that res with less than 512mb of memory?

I would assume many games without AA etc. I mean lets say Quake 3 for instance I am sure that would run at that res without your AA etc.

But then we get into semantics of what is a good game and what isn't which isn't what the neocon said. I was just stating his "short but concise" comments were wrong unless he elaborates.

Could you tell me which console you own and I could maybe write you alist of true 1920*1080 games that run on the 512mb ram you state is not possible.

This thread will end in mis-information. PC hardware is not comparible to Console hardware. Consoles can get MUCH more power from it's 'limited' hardware in comparison to a PC with the same parts.

Isn't CoD4 the pretty SD res you were after though?

1024x600 is still significantly higher than 640x480. One thing I wish to note; Call of Duty 4 runs and looks fantastic compared to a lot of other games out on the market. This is due in no small part to being 1024x600. If it was 1280x720p, the game would either run slower than the 60 frames it is already at (in fact, one wonders if the developers ever considered 1280x720p @ 30fps) or sacrifice a lot of the existing detail to maintain the frame-rate. It's the same for Halo 3 - if that was full 1280x720p, it would run like a dog. My point so far is that if the current generation of consoles stayed in the SD realm, graphics in today's games would be very detailed and rich, albeit at a lower resolution.

It's understandable that many people prefer higher resolution over graphical detail - today's high definition games look incredibly sharp. I just think it should have waited another generation, especially when taken into consideration that the vast, vast majority of gamers don't have HDTV sets at home. Games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 also prove that the 640x480 resolution isn't exactly proving detrimental to the potential lustre and beauty of today's graphics.

i tried both ps3 and 360, sold them.

obviously i am talking about next gen titles, such as ut3. will the ps3 be rendering that at <720p and then upscaling to glorious 1080p?

PAL wide-screen is 720*576.

Erm... you know that neither the PS3 or 360 have 512MB of dedicated RAM right?

Yes, but that was not the point I was making. He stated that you needed 512MB VRAM, not I. I try to only correct one of his misleading statements per post :D Else I get tired very quickly!!

you do need 512+ vram to render a game , like UT3 at 1920x1080, don't you?

the ps3 is faking 1080p by rendering the game at much lower resolution and then upscaling, is it not?

Possibly UT3 (almost definitely but I don't know enough about the engine to say authoritively), your comment did not mention that inititially. My point was there are true 1080p games that will come this gen, and are already here.

You said "you'd need 512mb+ video ram for a start for 1080p" whcih was my point. Depends on the game itself is what I meant. Its all a matter of which games you mean really. People don't all buy 360 and ps3 to play your latest greatest FPS games only. Else XBLA and PSN would not sell games and some of these are 1080p.

That's a very general statement that's just wrong, a 8800GTS 320MB can easily render a game (half life 2 for example) at 1080p, it could easily handle UT3 at low settings as well.

it had a question mark at the end which means its a question, not a factual statement

The game is actually rendered at something like 1066x600 and upscaled. So running at 1080p, there won't be any extra pixels, it's just interpolation.

This answers my question perfectly.thankyou for that and thankyou for everyone elses replies.it's saved me a bit of money as Ive decided not to get the TV I was going to get.:)

Ridge Racer 7 on the PS3 is full 1080p. And look amazing, so it is possible, but rare. Maybe in a couple of years when programmers know how to get full power out of the PS3 can we see more 1080p titles
