Coilwhine!! :(

I was not gonna say anything but from reading the forums the G1 does seem quite an offender, the card I tested had it very slightly but only when overclocked to near 1600MHz core. At stock it was fine!

mines silent :D

i use a antec high current psu. :)

Dear lord you better be kidding!!!! I wont bother overclocking it so it better NOT!

The guy on the phone said he will try get out another card asap if this one whines so i dont do without for xmas.

Ill skip 2.0 rage and go straight for Gibbo 10.1!! xD

well that puts me off buying 970, no way I could stand any such noise. I have a corsair PSU HX1000w (made by CWT and internally identical to Thermaltake Toughpower 1500w http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/594) PSU works fine afaik has powered Asus ATI 4870X2 (single card dual chip) and currently a Gygabite GTX 670 OC Winforce without any issues. This was a top of the line PSU back in the day and got universal great recommendations both on these forums and on major HW review websites

anyway I would be outraged if I had same problem as OP. According to this article the main culprit seems to be the R22 inductor used on the GPU, although PSU can also be a factor http://wccftech.com/nvidia-gtx-970-coil-whine/. it seems all GPU brands are affected. At around £300 card that is an expensive lottery ticket esp when you don't win anything!

to be safe I won't purchase these cards since it seems they were not very well designed in order to compete with AMD pricing

also some troubleshooting tips that I hhave read on the web, have made me laugh ie limit the FPS - lol spend to upgrade a GPU to then limit FPS; how about don't buy it! be happy with what you have and wait for something better in the next year?

PS good luck to OP, I fully understand his aggravation

NEW 970 HAS COILWHINE!!!!

Ok the G1 is way better qaulity than the Evga, its massive too!! All metal shroud and backplate, looks amazing! Packaged much better, in foam and AS bag.

Plugged it in, it did give me graphical glitches until i updated the drivers, the Evga didnt do this. It also crashed my PC once, but all seems fine now.

The coilwhine is there even on desktop but very quiet which is weird as the Evga was dead silent until underload.

In games the coilwhine is much quieter than the Evga, so the card is of much better quality, however it does whine! Above 150 FPS it gets much louder but with vysnc its much quieter than the Evga.

FPS games are still a no go due to the coilwhine :( Rome 2 and COH2 were OK with Vsync, much better than the Evga but still too annoying.

Do i try another G1? or get that 290X Lightning? Preorder for the 19th means ill get it for the weekend or Monday? Monday is cutting it close for returns if i get borked card.

Swapping the G1 i should be able to get another 1 by Friday.

Its weird how the G1 always has whine with no load but is quieter under load :\

I really do hate these 970s, I love the G1 though it looks so nice, why the hell would they put cheap crap that whines on such a card???

Help me Gibbo!!

Do you know yet if the one you originally returned whined when OcUK tested it on a different PSU?

As you've now had two cards that whined, this makes me believe a little more that the power frequencies your PSU is producing doesn't play well with the design of the chips/circuits on the 970. I would say your options at this point are to get a different PSU and see if that produces power the 970 is happier, and quieter, with or go for the AMD route and see if that will play nicer with your current PSU.

Definitely sounds like its the psu that is causing this coil whine.

What's the chance the OP could have gotten two whining cards!

If you let me know your RMA number for the EVGA I shall grab that card if its still in our RMA department and test it. If it whines for me then it is clear your having bad luck.

But every G1 I tested has emitted whine when overclocked, but very slight, certainly nothing at desktop on any card I've tried which is making me think your system/PSU frequencies are causing noise.

Let me know the RMA for EVGA card, I can go find that card, test it to see if I get terrible whine with it here.

Well i did test the first card on 4 different PSUs so im positive it was the card that time. I havent tested this on any other PSU but like i say it is quieter than the Evga card although it whines even on the desktop, which is kinda annoying.

Im positive when OCUK test the Evga it will whine, Evga even offered me a replacement and then a different model if the 2nd card whined but obv it takes longer as id need to send it back to Germany, OCUK is the quickest route, specially near xmas!

I didnt wanna go AMD but im not buying another PSU and im getting rotten luck with these 970s!

Someone on here already posted a G1 on the same PSU as me whine free, but then Gibbo mentioned he even got coilwhine on the G1 with a premium PSU!!

My choices now are,

1. AMD 290X lightning

2. Try second G1

3. Try another brand?

4. Give up and slit wrist!

Never in my life have i been so stressed over a PC upgrade! Its supposed to be exciting and fun! Not dreading putting the new card in to find you have coilwhine!

Mind you guys, OCUK have been brilliant so far, i cant fault them at all!

Get one of the Lightnings that will make your PSU whine even more like a *****. 'Then' you can contemplate slitting your wrists. :p

Hello there Nines11

Gibbo has just alerted me to this thread.

I have tracked down your order details and RMA number. Gibbo and myself will personally test this card when it comes back to us under RMA to look into it for you.

Hopefully we can replicate your issue or point you in the right direction if not faulty.

Regards

Bailey

Ok nice one ;)

Like i say the G1 is quieter but has a whine even at idle which was not the case with the Evga. Its different sounding too, it is coilwhine but different frequencies.

Look forward to hearing your results.

Mine hasn't even at high frames...

Superflower PSU maybe? :D

Only when clocked to max, it was running over 1600MHz, sub 1600MHz it was OK, I was basically thrashing the hell out of it. Ran on Antec 1300W HCP and Superflower Platinum, neither stopped it over 1600MHz.

Am talking benching as well, so super high FPS too.

The Lightnings a power hungry card. If that Psu of yours is a pile, the Lightning will put it to the test.

Its not a pile lol, its fine, its ran other power hungry cards fine, just the 970s that are dodgy.

Although im not aware to buy other brands due to better quality, so you always learn something!

His PSU is no use for a Lightning card to be honest, they need huge power and quality power. Its a card over-engineered built for hardcore overclocking. If it does not whine its not down to PSU it is because Lightning is over-engineered.

Yip! I know, that's why I said it would put his Psu to the Test :D

Power Connectors: 2x 8-pin + 1x 6-pin required.

Either way he's going to have to sort something out.
